Project Summary

The Water Quality and Flow Monitoring System measures the following water parameters for analysis; Potential Hydrogen (pH), Conductivity and flow rate via sensors. The main concept behind this project can be described in a simple block diagram in figure 1.The system as a whole comprises of sensors, an analogue to digital convertor (ADC), a microcontroller, a Wi-Fi module and cloud server. The data collected sent to a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server or a cloud server. FTP is a standard protocol for transferring files between a client and server over an internet network. In this system, a cloud server in conjunction with a local machine is utilized for data analysis.
While monitoring parameters, it is perceived that one should receive a stable set of results. Therefore a continuous series of anomalous measurements would indicate the potential introduction of a water pollutant and the user will be notified of this activity with the aid of IoT technology.Independently, these parameters provide very little information in terms of how polluted the water actually is. Therefore, analysis will consider collective parameter behavior in order to generate a valid output, which is either polluted or not unpolluted.

Project Objectives

The aim of this project is to:

  •  Measure water quality including (but not limited to) pH, conductivity and Turbidity as water quality parameters
  •  Measure the rate of flow of water.
  • Design and develop the hardware that efficiently supports the sensor data acquisition
  • Design and develop the hardware that efficiently communicates data to a IoT based front-end for data monitoring
  • Map the data on map for ease of tracking

Project Implementation Method

The system consist of four sensors turbidity sensor, flow sensor, conductivity sensor and pH sensor which the deprived in water these sensor measure and value and connected serial through ADC interface are fed and calibrated in Arduino uno . The Arduino uno fetch the data which further coordinates with wifi module, the data when fetched is sent to cloud. the data is received by IOT platform from cloud by wireless sensor Network. The false positive readings such as anomalous readings, over a short period of time, will be recorded but will not be treated as an alert.

Benefits of the Project

This project alarms the authority and consumer that the water is being polluted. It will help those people who are unaware of water hygiene and allow them to take precaution. Water
contains minerals, salts and suspended particles and pH. These minerals and salts are necessary in water up to a specific range. if this range exceeds the water is not useful for drinking, washing and other domestic use. this system can be used for notifying clean but unhealthy water which contain higher or lower rate than certain range of these substances. Water other than optimum power of hydrogen(pH) may prove fatal to plant and animal species. The water pipes may have leakage for any reason or the water supply in any area higher or lower than requirement can be identified via this system.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The system contain 4 parameters monitoring, it can be more efficient by including other parameters that are Redox, level of particular gas and salt or minerals dissolved in the water. Further, by using highly efficient sensors it can be implemented in water dams,lakes and oceans. It also involve application other than water such as air pollution and soil pollution monitoring. Further advancement leads the for quality monitoring of diary products. The motor connected to the pipe can on and off the system in case of emergency
and adjust the flow rate accordingly. Other include the filtration of water when water is contaminated.
