PLC based Automation of Water Treatment Plant
Water is a basic need of people for their life. However, the need of water is increasing along with the growing demand from manufacturing, thermal electricity generator, and domestic use. Artesian water as commonly used water usually has poor water quality. To improve the quality of water, water treatment plant is implemented. In Conventional Filtration Plant, much time is required to discover a problem in water treatment and distribution because the controlling and monitoring process which is done by an operator manually.
Over the years the demand for high quality, greater efficiency and automated machines has increased in the industrial sector of water treatment plants. PLC is an industrial computer that monitors inputs and outputs to make decisions based on the program stored to the PLC’s memory. The use of PLC’s help to reduce human decision-making efforts to gain higher efficiency. PLC programming is the act of creating internal logic for a programmable logic controller (PLC). The proposed automation solution for waste water treatment plant involves the use of a series of small control systems that run the facility, PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) continuously monitor the operation of pumps, closures and other devices, collect and execute commands coming from the higher levels. This project is fully automated where all Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation equipment are controlled through PLC. To maintain water quality appropriate to standard and to discover a problem regarding distribution process efficiently, SCADA which contains the design of PLC program and HMI is used to do centralized monitoring and controlling process. So, SCADA interface is designed which is user friendly.
The Project Objectives are:
The proposed automation solution for waste water treatment plant involves the use of a series of small control systems that run the facility, PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) continuously monitor the operation of pumps, closures and other devices, collect and execute commands coming from the higher levels. This project is fully automated where all Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation equipment are controlled through PLC.
PLC will automate the outputs of motors, alarms, and pump and solenoid valves integrated in water treatment plant with the help of sensor inputs. The water treatment method used in this plant is as follows:
To maintain water quality appropriate to standard and to discover a problem regarding distribution process efficiently, SCADA which contains the design of PLC program and HMI is used to do centralized monitoring and controlling process. So, SCADA interface is designed which is user friendly.
The benefits of Projects are:
The project prototype will be composed of both Hardware and Software. The programming used in this project will be Ladder Logic Diagram. SCADA interface will be showing on HMI. All the sensors reading and opening, closing of valves will be shown on HMI. Working of Plant can be controlled by SCADA.
Working of Project:
When main switch will turn ON, the pump will intake waste water and fill it in the waste water storage tank. The screening process will happen before filling in to waste water storage tank. After filling of tank, it will move to coagulation tank where calculated alum with the help of sensor is used as coagulant to make micro flocs of suspended particles. Then it will move to the Sedimentation tank where slow mixing (i.e., stirrer motor) is used to make optimum size flocs. These flocs/sludges will move to the sludge tank. After this process, water will move to the Disinfection tank where disease spreading microorganisms and pathogens will be killed. Then in will move to the Filtration Tank where granular media filter will remove the further remaining particles. After this PH of water will be tested and clean water will be stored in clean water storage tank.
