Project Summary

In the era automation, each and everything is getting automated in the world for the smooth life of human beings. Here the proposed project is to help those who are having difficulties in maintaining their aquariums, especially those who are frequently outstations or at work and are busy, thus unable to constantly monitor their aquariums, secondly to provide suitable and healthy environment for the fishes to properly nurture and thrive. Through the use of this system, users can monitor and maintain their fish aquarium regularly using devices such as smartphones via internet & LED Display. The major role of this system is to enable users to monitor and maintain their fish through the Smart Aquarium which include tasks such as feeding the fishes on time, checking the water temperature, heating water, water level, automatic lighting, water filtration and aeration and changing the water automatically. When there are emergencies such as water leakage in aquarium or the drop of the water level of aquarium to below normal levels, the system would trigger an alarm and notify the user. Besides that, sensors such as water temperature sensor, light sensor and water level sensor are also required to make sure that the system functions optimally. Other than that, water pump, water filter and motors for changing water and feeding the fishes, are also required.

The present aquarium systems are monitored manually this consumes lot of time and man power. In existing systems, one cannot feed the fish when their absence, it may bring threat to fishes, temperature of the water cannot be determined as it can be changed according to the seasons and fishes may suffer from this. Lightings cannot be monitored using the remote or switch, it is operated manually.

In present computing real world objects communicate with each other and act intelligently. Internet of Things is an emerging technology which realizes this present nature of computing. Aquarium management needs timely gathering of water parameter value changes. These changes may affect the life of aquatic animals in the aquarium. The proposed system collects the real time data from aquarium environment using sensors, processes it and updates the temperature of water in real-time in response of any unfavourable situations through temperature probes.

Project Objectives

  • The servo motor is used to feed the fishes in proper time in absence of user.
  • Understood and operated this project by nontechnical users easily without the need for any advanced technical knowledge.
  • To make it more convenient and easier for users to maintain their aquarium from anywhere around the world.
  • To develop a reliable aquarium monitoring system for users.
  • To develop a real-time based aquarium monitoring system to send the data about the aquarium to the users.
  • To develop an aquarium monitoring system that is able to make informed decisions and perform certain action on its own during critical situations without the users.
  • To stabilize temperature of the aquarium.
  • Remove wastes and keep water clean.
  • To keep fish healthy by providing suitable environment giving adequate temperature, feed and water quality.

Project Implementation Method

The Aim of our project is to replace manual maintenance of Fish Aquarium with an Automated System. The present aquarium monitoring system, in the absence of human being it is hard to maintain aquarium frequently like feeding, sensing the temperature, man power etc. The world is moving towards automation, so if we want to do some changes in the previous system, we have to use the new techniques. Water temperature and outside temperature are displayed in LCD display, it can be checked through the mobile app through internet. Turning our present aquarium monitoring into automated one.

The prototyping model is used for the development, it is a systems development method in which a prototype is built, tested and then reworked as necessary until an acceptable outcome is achieved from which the complete system or product can be developed. This model works best in scenarios where not all of the project requirements are known in detail ahead of time. It is an iterative, trial-and-error process that takes place between the developers and the users.

The Smart Aquarium minimizes the problem of Aquarium owners by shifting it from manual to automatic mode. They would not have to watch out and keep an eye on their aquariums and fish again and again. Smart Aquarium would be there. If any problem occurs it would notify and take necessary action.

  • An Aquarium Monitoring System will constantly transfer the status of the aquarium on the app and users can monitor them through the internet.
  • An Aquarium Monitoring System will feed the fishes at appropriate times automatically, based on fixed times or the users could also feed the fishes at a click of a button.
  • An Aquarium Monitoring System will able to make appropriate decisions and perform actions such as changing the aquarium water if the water is too cloudy.
  • To develop Aquariums in the state of art image by adopting the relevant technology.

Benefits of the Project

The coverage of this applies to all size of aquariums, recreational and professional,this system can also be utilised in large Fish Ponds, Fish Farm and in other Aquaculture Practices.

Proposed and automated Arduino based aquarium monitoring system that enables easy control over the several issues of aquarium such as temperature variations, feeding schedule, lighting system which contains sensors to gather the information required for desired actuation using Arduino controller, which provides efficient automated control over the issues.

The Smart Aquarium Monitoring System has the functions as digital display, temperature control, lighting time, feeding, water changing and control functions. The Aquarium tanks have high performance, both excellent in quality and reasonable in price.
