Project Summary

For many of years,  switching systems through converters have been disturbing the electric power supply systems (renewable energy, telecommunication and electric vehicles). Although , renewable energy is getting attention worldwide due to environment issues like greenhouse gasses and environment temperature issues, so that converter should also be accelerated along with.

Among the dc dc converter, the low voltage gain , low efficiency , large size , high ripple current , less power conversion capacity , large numbers of switches and large number of electronic equipment are the major technical issues. Among these switching losses are more likely present into these converter systems. Some previous soft  switching dc dc  converters still have excellent features but some technical problems still need to be resolved, like significant power losses in the auxiliary circuits inevitably appear. The beauty of electronics is in the versatility of electronic equipment. By the way, using of proper equipment and reducing the cardinality of switches will lead to solve these problems.

By considering these issues, the key purpose for designing and modeling an efficient power converter is to enhance the overall capacity and efficiency of converter through suitable circuitry for diversifying dc inputs like solar, fuel cell and batteries. That can be done by either changing the operation technology or by changing the equipment properties. Such an efficient converter will be used to increase the efficiency of whole system.

The suitable method to carry out this research is by using the MATLAB/ Simulink. Through which we can analyze and upgrade the models as per our requirement and choose the suitable model for the advanced and efficient soft switching converter. After all make the prototype and compare the results.

Project Objectives

The research project work aims to develop understanding of  the factors and  loss reduction  techniques for the soft switching converters through the real time based simulation and comparison of results with prototype.

The General objective:

The modeling and designing the  advanced types of soft switching dc dc  converter.

The specific objectives:

  1. To reduce  the switching losses.
  2. To increase the efficiency.
  3. To increase the power conversion capacity.
  4. To reduce the high ripple current.
  5. To increase the low voltage gain.

Project Implementation Method

The project implementation can be summarised as follow:

  • Step # 1: Properly designing the prototype of soft switched dc dc converter and making sure all the connections are as par diagram.
  • Step # 2: Connect the 48 volts solar panel and 12 volts battery, as a dc source with soft switched converter.
  • Step # 3: Attach the motor and lamp as a dc loads to this  converter.
  • Step # 4: Get the waveform and measurement through oscilloscope and meters.
  • Step # 5: Analyze the switching waveforms across the switches, inductors, capacitors and loads. After all  compare  between the simulation and real time prototype.
  • Step # 6: Make all  the circuit connection permanent. Design the proper look for project.

Benefits of the Project

Regarding the technical  advantages of the project, the first and foremost benefit is that the soft switched dc dc converter will provide simplicity in design, lesser cost, lower number of switches and reduce noise. Along with this it also gives fast response to the transient.

In many industrial applications, the multiple-input dc–dc converter is useful to combine several input power sources whose voltage levels and/or power capacity are different and to get regulated output voltage for the load from them it is required to convert a fixed voltage DC source into variable voltage DC source. A DC DC converter can be considered as DC equivalent to an AC transformer with a continuously variable turns ratio. Like a transformer, it can be used to step-down or step-up a DC voltage source

 Generally it can be  used in solar grids, automobiles, stepping up the batteries, Pulse creation, laptop adaptor, domestic appliances or even in small machines it is also very beneficial for switching mode regulators to convert a DC voltage, normally unregulated, to a regulated DC output voltage. The regulation is normally achieved by PWM at fixed frequency and the switching device can be normally BJT, MOSFET and  IGBT.

On the bottom line, its necessarily required to match the DC power requirements of load by different sources .

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The Final Project will  reduce the switching losses by making the zero voltage switching ZVS and zero current switching ZCS through the resonance tropology. Inductor ,used in the converter, provides the continuous conduction mode (CCM) to supply the smooth power..This proposed  work will play pivotal role in renewable energy and sustainable development. Implementation of this project will be  efficient and economical.

Final protype  of designed converter will contain mosfet circuitry arrangement along with microcontroller mounted on PCB.
