Artificial Intelligence

Project Summary

The objective of this project is to build a blind man stick that can detect obstacles, and potholes and thus help the blind person travel independently.
it provides the visually impaired with a better navigational tool. The ultrasonic blind walking stick is way more advanced than the traditional walking stick as the use of sensors makes object detection easier. The GPS system provides information regarding his current location.

Project Objectives

  • Purcahse sensors and sticks
  • Assemble the sensors and Program them to detect an obstacle
  • Install GPS to real-time location and update the location on the map
  • Pin point the blind person location on the map
  • Navigation plan for the blind person to reach the target place

We forgot and were unaware to add the equipment to the requirements section.   Now I focal person cannot modify equipment. Please consider this section as equipment and price

Project Implementation Method

The Arduino Nano is used to control all the sensors, but we can also build this Smart blind stick using Arduino   The complete board is powered by a 9V battery which is regulated to +5V using a 7805 Voltage regulator. The Ultrasonic sensor is powered by 5V and the trigger and Echo pin are connected to Arduino nano pins 3 and 2. The LDR is connected with a resistor of value 10K to form a Potential divider and the difference in voltage is read by Arduino ADC pin A1. The ADC pin A0 is used to read the signal from the RF receiver. The output of the board is given by the Buzzer which is connected to pin 12.

The RF remote circuit is also working. I have used a small hack to make this RF remote control circuit work. Normally while using this 433 MHz RF module requires an Encoder and Decoder or two MCU to work, like in our previous RF Transmitter and Receiver circuit we used the HT12D and HT12E, decoder and encoder IC respectively. But, in our application we just need the receiver to detect if the transmitter is sending some signals. So the Data pin of the transmitter is connected to the Ground or Vcc of the supply.

The data pin of the receiver is passed through an RC filter and then given to the Arduino .whenever the button is pressed the Receiver output some constant ADC value repeatedly. This repetition cannot be observed when the button is not pressed. So we write the Arduino program to check for repeated values to detect if the button is pressed. So that is how a Blind person can track his stick.  how RF transmitter and receiver work.

I have used a perf board to solder all the connections so that it gets intact with the stick. But, we can also make them on a breadboard. These are the boards that I made for this blind stick project using Arduino.  and in this stick, the GPS is also functional

Benefits of the Project

The generally available blind walking sticks are capable of finding obstacles that touch the stick physically. It is helpful to a blind person but we here propose an advanced blond stick system that allows a blind person to sense objects before a stick touches them. Check if there is water in front. Also, it includes a GPS tracking feature to find lost persons along with other useful features. The system uses a microcontroller-based circuit to handle the entire system's functioning.

Our system uses an ultrasonic sensor to sense objects within a certain range of the person and sound beeps of a particular type to signal obstacles. Also, we use a shorting system to detect water in front of the person. As soon as the front wires of the system dip in water that system signal the blind person by a different beep pattern to signal water in front.

Now, this system also has a light-sensing feature to give the blind person a sense of light. It signals the person if there is light or darkness so that he/she can know if it is night or has entered a very dark room/facility. If the person loses the stick the person can use an rf remote so the stick starts beeping and the person can find it. One more important feature of the system is that the system allows the blind person to send out an SMS message with his/her GPS location to the caretaker/relatives/loved ones of the person in case of trouble or being lost.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In this Smart stick, there is a sensor that senses the obstacles or walls from a 1 or half meter range then this stick vibrates and makes a buzzing sound. This Smart Stick warns the blind person that there is an obstacle or wall in front of him/her. Then that person will be warned of obstacles or walls. and with the help of GPS, it tells the direction and location to the blind person by directing him with voice
