SELF STABILIZING SPOON
Patients suffering Parkinson’s disease have serious tremor that happens whenever they try to grab something with their hands. More accurately it happens whenever they focus on the part of their body because their brain neurons are damaged thus, cannot control their body independently. Major disadvantage that comes with symptoms is not being able to eat on their own.
The aim of this project is to produce a self stabilizing spoon that will compensate for unintended motions, such as tremors. With a low budget, the goal is to make a highly efficient prototype that consists mainly of a microcontroller and servo motors. There are several different technological assisting spoons on the market today, but the products are unfortunately quite expensive
A stabilizing spoon is a device which maintains a horizontal position of its front regardless of the
motion it receives from the user at the rear end of the spoon. For a theoretical demonstration of
the spoon’s movement, stabilizing spoons have been developed foremost to help people with
tremors and people who are functionally challenged with difficulties moving their hands. Its aim
is to assist these people so they can eat independently. People with hand tremors could be
persons with Parkinson’s disease and people who are functionally challenged.
The spoon is required to maintain a horizontal position, with respect to two axes. Two servo
motors will be placed orthogonally to each other to establish a system of two degrees of
freedom. With this setup in place, the spoon is intended to maintain its spoon bowl in a
horizontal position
Once the gyroscope and accelerometer values have been converted to angular readings, they
have to be assessed to determine the movement received by the user towards the rear end of
the spoon
The microcontroller Arduino Uno sources remote power from a 5-volt battery connected to its
VCC junction. The sensor interrupt is received through a digital pin, while the data is transferred
through an analog pin, along with the pulse. The servo motors are aligned on top of one
another, perpendicularly. This is done to provide two degrees of freedom
This will compensate for unintended motions, such as tremors. With a low budget, the goal is to make a highly efficient prototype that consists mainly of a microcontroller and servo motors. There are several different technological assisting spoons on the market today, but the products are unfortunately quite expensive.
•We have researched on gyroscope and microcontroller, its working and functionality.
•
•We have run a simulation on Tinker cad to see the working concept of gyroscope and motors.
•
•We have work on the coding area and made a program that rotates the servo motors in two different direction(Horizontal and vertical) according to the movement of gyroscope.
•
•As we have setup the components and run our prototype to checks its working.
