Rail accidents are a major problem in the transportation industry in many countries. There is an urgent need to install protective elements to prevent accidents. This project describes the design and implementation of the train safety system. The system has two stages accident detection and prevention.
The first phase contains the system containing the sensors, GPS system, controller, and a GSM module. The second phase, for accident prevention, we will automate the junction gates to prevent any misadventure.
Our project’s main objectives are:
- Monitoring of train speed using sensors when approaching the crossing.
- Installation of GPS module on the train.
- Placement of sensors on track for train detection.
- LCD display at crossing to provide train information, like distance, speed, and direction.
- Installation of automatic motorized gates at the railway crossing.
- Transmission of train location using GSM to the control room.
Arduino UNO and Atmega microcontrollers are used for implementation. In our project, we are controlling the automatic opening and closing of level crossing gates by microcontroller. Ultrasonic Sensors along the railway track for the detection of train, we are using traffic light indicators, buzzer and LCD to display the required information. GPS and GSM module along with Arduino UNO are placed on the train to keep tracking the speed, distance, and direction.

• More reliable because machines cant be bribed.
• More user-friendly.
• This system can be implemented at every railway crossing.
• Less human interference.
• More preventive from accidents as compared to manual systems.
The technical details for our project are the following:
- Firstly, we are detecting the train using ultrasonic sensors which works in such a way that the train is detected by fixing the RTT(round trip time).
- Then we are taking information from GPS modules like train speed, location, and direction.
- Then we are installing the GSM module on train for communication to the control room which works on 5v DC power.
- We implemented a motorized gate at a level crossing which will automatically open and close depending upon the condition. This gate is driven by a DC motor that operates on 12v.
- Installing GSM module at level crossing for two way communication.
- Led bulbs are installed at level crossing that operates on 12v DC as traffic light indicators.
- We are using an alarm that works on 220v AC voltage that will sound when train approaches the crossing.
