Project Summary

Road accidents are very common in developing countries especially in Pakistan and the situation has become worsened day by day. Around 36,000 people were killed in road accidents across the country in 2018. Research shows that Punjab has proven to have the highest road accident deaths, followed by Sindh, KPK and Baluchistan. In Karachi alone, thousands of lives are lost yearly due to road accidents and due to other medical emergencies. A prompt response to victims of road accidents and other patients suffering from life threatening decease can be carried out timely if ambulances and other rescue facilities are available. However, due to resource constrains, majority of Pakistan’s population is deprived of medical rescue services including the availability of ambulances in adequate numbers. The shortage of emergency rescue facilities can be minimized by the use of Motorcycle Ambulance. The Motorcycle Ambulance is an emergency vehicle which can easily and immediately respond to any medical emergencies in much lesser response time then a fully loaded ambulance. These types of ambulances exist in many developed as well as in many under develop countries such as India, Israel, UK, Thailand etc. UNICEF and Government of Southern Sudan worked together and made Motorcycle Ambulance with the aim of Reducing Maternal Mortality Rates in Southern Sudan. In Pakistan in 2017, Rescue 1122 introduced the concept of Motorcycle Medical Response Force but they only had a rider with First Aid Training and necessary kit.  Motorcycle Ambulance consist of stretcher (partially covered) and also consisting of health monitoring system. A GPS module is also connected with ambulance guiding to the nearest hospital. The stretcher can easily be connected to a 70cc bike this makes it much convenient to extend. A solar system is used to run all electronic apparatus.

Project Objectives

Although Motorcycle Ambulance (MA) are being used successfully in several parts of the world, especially in several developed countries, but according to best of our knowledge, MA is being introduced for the first time in Pakistan. The main objective of this project is to design and develop a MA which can be attached with a communally available motorcycle like 70cc motorcycle. Since price of MA is significantly lower than a simple ambulance, therefore it can be very helpful in improving emergencies rescues services in cities and rural areas of Pakistan. Upon successful implementation of this project, we are sure that this would play a role of game changer in emergency rescue services in Pakistan.

Project Implementation Method

Motorcycle Ambulance consist of stretcher which is partially covered and supported by a wheel. The stretcher can easily be attached to any 70cc bike. Once it attached with a bike, the vehicle works as a tricycle. MA consists of health monitoring system which measures different essential health parameter like heartbeat, body temperature etc. These parameters are displayed on the screen available in the ambulance. Ultrasonic sensors are used for accident avoiding purposes. A GPS module is used to guide the ambulance to nearest hospital. Arduino Uno is playing the role as the controller for all of the sensors. On the other hand, Raspberry Pie is acting as a controller to develop GUI interface for display and for GPS management. A solar panel is mounted on the roof of MA to charge a battery which runs all electronic gadgets.

Benefits of the Project

MA is a type of emergency vehicle which either carries a paramedic or first responder to a patient. Because of its size and performance, a motorcycle ambulance is able to respond to a medical emergency much faster than a car, van, or fire truck in heavy traffic, which can increase survival rates for patients suffering life threatening emergencies. Motorcycle Ambulances is a low cost solution to a fully loaded ambulance (which is minimum Rs. 1,200,000/-). Moreover, the response time will be faster and it can easily get through narrow alleys in most parts of the Karachi and in villages where an ambulance cannot get through. Basically these types of ambulance can be used anywhere in Pakistan. Especially to those areas where ambulance find difficulty in crossing the routes due to heavy traffic. These ambulances can decrease mortality rate and can contribute in saving human lives significantly. In country like Pakistan, where more than 70% population is deprived of basic medical facilities, MAs can work as immediate response unit to provide first aid facilities. This could also be a part of hospital service. One of the major benefit of these types of ambulances is that a huge ambulance network can be built without heavy investment.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable will be a Motorcycle Ambulance with a stretcher which can be attached to a 70cc bike using a simple assembly. This ambulance will be loaded with a health monitoring system which consists of heart beat sensor and body temperature sensor. Ultrasonic sensors will be used for avoiding accident and GPS module will be attached for guiding MA to nearest hospital. All sensors will be controlled by Arduino Uno and all the measurements will be displayed on screen through Raspberry Pi GUI interface. All equipments will be powered through a solar system.
