Summary:

Washing machine has become an essential electrical appliance and it plays a vital role in our daily life. The regular washing machine uses mechanical timer for Start/Stop the washing process which is not efficient with respect to electricity, cleaning, and maintenance. So we have designed and developed a prototype of smart washing machine. An intelligent controller for automating the cleaning process has been designed to improve the performance and efficiency of the washing machine.  This control system will help to automate the wash time feature based on the type of dirt, type of clothes, amount of detergent used, amount of water and water temperature. Further, the performance of the washing machine is also being monitored remotely through internet by an IOT (Internet of thing) technology.

Project Objectives

Objective:

The objective of this project is to design a prototype of low cost and efficient washing machine that would be able to save electricity consumption, amount of detergent and amount of water used according to the type of cloth, type of dirt, amount of cloth, amount of dirt and water temperature.

Project Implementation Method

Implementation Method:

Central processing unit of whole prototype is arduino (mega2560). It takes input from the following modules (temperature sensor, dirt sensor, water level detector, detergent control) based on that it decides wash time as per following input matrix:

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Deliverable of this project is a normal used washing machine. There is a panel attached to it that will operate the functioning of the machine. Main part of the panel is arduino(mega2560) that is connected to the lcd, keypad interface, temperature sensor, detergent controller, dirt sensor, water level detector and water inlet valve.

The whole panel is powered up from 220v to 5v and 12v power supply. 

Water inlet valve:

Water inlet valve is used to inlet  the required amount of water in the wash tub according to the selected input.

Water level detector:

Water level detector detects the level of water in the wash tub such as 4ltr is considered as 1 level and 16ltr is considered as 2 level etc. 

Dirt sensor:

Dirt sensor senses the level of dirt in the wash tub in terms of voltage and display as water is less dirty and water is more dirty.

Temperature sensor:

Temperature sensor sense the temperature of water in the wash tub.

Detergent control:

Detergent Controller is used to control the amount of detergent required as per selected input parameters that are type of cloth and type of dirt.

Keypad interface:

Keypad interface is used to select the type of cloth and the type of dirt.

Lcd display:

Lcd is used display selected parameters according to the backend algorithm.
