Project Summary

In this project, we design a super capacitor and battery operated electric vehicle. We combine super capacitor with battery to make a hybrid energy storage system for our vehicle, which work more efficiently then conventional electric vehicles. Super capacitors are introduced into the system, that gives high power density and high efficiency. Battery will provide power when motor speed is low and for high speed super capacitor is used. We also control the speed of the motor through frequency control method inverter.

This is powerful, fast running, fuel efficient, smoke free and noise free vehicle. We charge our vehicle through wapda then energy store in super capacitor and battery use to drive motor (permanent magnet synchronous motor ), which is coupled with vehicle shaft to run it. We use super capacitor when high speed is required (means acceleration is required) and otherwise we use battery when we run it on average speed. All this process take place through energy management strategy where we use different sensors to operate  our vehicle.

Project Objectives

  • Using HESS (hybrid energy storage system) in place of conventional energy system increase our vehicle efficiency.
  • Our first and big aim is to run our vehicle on high speed with efficient source management system.
  • Super capacitor and battery  based EVs (Electric vehicles) have both high power densities and high energy densities.
  • This is new technology and we have cheap in cost, light in weight electric vehicle.
  • Pollution free and fuel efficient, because in this vehicle there is no ICE internal combustion engine.
  • Super capacitor based electric vehicle have fast charging facility.

Project Implementation Method

First we conduct research (collecting data), read different papers related to our project and do simulation (software) on matlab to record and check different graph and values and proteus to make different circuit on software. After software work we will design the respective operational circuits and implement it on hardware. Our hardware consist of all circuit used in our project e.g inverter, buck boost converter, energy management strategy, different sensors and permanent magnet synchronous motor. After hardware, we optimize it and represent it.

Benefits of the Project

Super capacitors and battery are employed as energy storage in many hybrid applications. Super capacitors have been explored batter than batteries in the electrical vehicles because the present considerably high power densities than those of batteries and have high energy density. Other than this super capacitor can also be used as additional energy storage for hybrid wind and photovoltic system it charge energy and discharges when required. There are many benefits of electric vehicles such as they have high efficiency, simple design, light in weight, cheap in cost, Pollution free and one of the important benefit is fast charging and fuel efficient.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A running electric vehicle with multiple energy sources including conventional battery and super capacitor. It would be a fast charging vehicle and discharged phenomenon is managed by the specially designed energy management system. This vehicle have both high power density and high energy density because of both super capacitor and battery. Super capacitor have high power density and batteries have high energy density. A vehicle which run on high speed and charged very fast within few seconds because of super capacitor is a new technology. By combining super capacitor with battery increase battery life time and also increase the overall efficiency of electric vehicle.
