Flexy Drive

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Now a days, the demand of electronic motor control is increasing rapidly. Everyone need cost effective solution without compromising reliability. The purpose of our project Flexy drive is to design the most feasible motor controller for use in industrial and electrical applications.

Our proposed project includes the development of three phase induction motor drive with speed sensing. It is based on PIC microcontroller which is dedicated for motor control applications.

The proposed drive is a low cost motor drive used for medium power three phase induction motor and is targeted for industrial and electric appliances.

Project Objectives

The main objective of our project is to control the speed of an AC motor by varying the frequency and voltages sent to the motor. Flexy drive also have the capacity to control the motor start up process.

Project Implementation Method

In order to accomplish above mentioned goal we start with simulations and then go towards experimentation. Figure 1 shows our approach to work on Flexy drive.

1. Literature Review

First we have gathered information regarding project. Read articles , research papers , journals and books on how to control speed of induction motor and how to accomplish this task.

2. Simulation of Project

Our next step was to simulate the project using software. We have used MATLAB Simulink tool to simulate the project and verify the results.

3. Finalizing components

After simulating project on MATLAB, we have searched about the components that we need, check their specifications based on the results obtained from simulation.

4. Experimentation

Experimentation is the hardware stage. It includes many stages starting from single phase half bridge inverter (with two mosfets) to three phase flexy drive. Figure 2 shows the different experimentation levels.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of the Flexy drive includes:

  1. Speed control of an AC motor
  2. Power factor correction
  3. Smooth start up of the motor
  4. Harmonic reduction
  5. Increased efficiency of the system
  6. PWM control
Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Flexy drive have programmable digital/analog inputs for setting output frequency, starting and stopping of motor connected to drive. It also have analog digital outputs for indicating the status of drive (on,off and trip) and output frequency. We will apply three phase AC voltage to rectifier that converts this AC into DC. This DC is of 311 V.  Filtered output of rectifier is  sent to the inverter that converts DC into three phase AC. This AC will drive the motor.

Motor Specifications:

Rated power 0.25 hp (186W)

Voltage = 440 V line to line

Rated speed = 1440 rpm
