Project Title

Development of Programmed Anti-Personnel Mine for Mine Dispensing System

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Conventional mines do not have self-detonation system, due to which, mines planted on WWII are still being discovered in different areas, which are causing causalities. To prevent further causalities an international law was made. According to this law, the mines should be designed such that they self-detonate or deactivate after certain time. We have designed a device that, when installed on mine, will detonate the mine after the defined time. In this project we have used two controllers for this purpose, one to set the self-detonation time named ‘control unit’ and other to self-detonate the mine after that time named ‘device’. The control unit has certain features like it communicates with the device using single wire protocol system, sets the mine detonation time and checks the battery status of device. Whereas the device is designed such that its size is very small i.e. no more than 2.5 inches in diameter, consumes very less current so that it can operate for a long time, runs on a coin cell and activates the mine if any external interrupt is sensed or the defined time is reached.

Project Objectives

To develop a programmable anti personnel landmine which would have the following features:

Project Implementation Method

Device consists of PIC16F688 microcontroller and a cell on which it runs for approximately 20 days. It is programmed by control unit by receiving pin # 5 of PIC 16F688 microcontroller and sends battery level to control unit from transmitting pin # 6 of PIC 16F688 microcontroller. To check the battery level, battery positive is connected with pin # 3 of PIC 16F688 microcontroller. To display the time and interrupt output led is connected with Pin # 7 of PIC 16F688 microcontroller. The wire trap input is connected with pin # 8 of PIC 16F688 microcontroller.

Benefits of the Project

This project has benefits in the field of ammunition industry. The conventional mine has the disadvantage that when they are employed they remain there in active state for decades. So a cause of injury to the civilians. This results in hatred towards the armed forces. With this programmable land mine, this problem is tackled. The mine when deployed will detonate after a certain predefined time will pass.

In short, the developed mine serve the purpose of previous conventional mines which is to protect the area and disable the enemy. In addition it is also safe for the civilians because it will detonate after the preset time.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We have designed a device for mine. This device will detonate the mine after predefined time or if there is an external pressure on mine. To achieve this task, we used two controllers. one controller is used in device, that will be installed on mine to detonate it, while the other controller is used to set the self-detonation time for mine and to check the status of cell on which the device will operate.

We use power formula to find the power absorbed by device (mine) in each time duration. The cell we use is of 3V and 210mAh. We find the energy of each time duration by multiplying the time with the relevant power. We use the cell for 11 hours total, in this time the power absorbed by mine is 6.60mW along with 2.20mA. For 11 hours’ energy consumed is 10.01mWh. If we divide the battery current 210mAh by average current of 2.20mA of 11 hours. As the current is of 11 hours, so we multiply the 69 hours with 11 hours it is 762 hours its mean that at this current we use it for 762 hours but our requirement is to use it for 300 hours.

When the self-detonation time is set to 5 hours, the initial current consumption is 0.23mA. Current consumption of device (mine) reaches to 0.22mA and gradually deceases until it becomes stable at 0.20mA as shown in figure below.
