Development of High Performance Cluster Computer CPU Based
Project Area of Specialization Computer ScienceProject SummaryThe field of avionics, aerospace and aerodynamics requires high computational power for its software applications to run smoothly. It involves high demanding simulation and modeling softwares as CFDRC, MATLAB, ANSYS Fluent etc. These softwares are too burdensome for conventional computers to handle, for large simulations. So, in this regard, we had three options:-
1) To purchase workstations : The problem with them is they prove to be too expensive and do not provide significant computational performance. Furthermore, they cannot be sufficiently upgraded as time passes on.
2)To buy off-the-shelf computing cluster (supercomputer) : this option again is too expensive
3)To develop our own computing cluster (supercomputer) : It proves to be least expensive of all options, can be upgraded as time goes on, and more computational power is required, its parts can be replaced.
Hence, our aim is to develop high performance cluster computer which can handle high demanding applications smoothly. As a result bottlenecking is avoided and simulations are done smoothly in an accurate and agile manner. So, researchers won't have to wait for days for their analysis to get completed as by workstations
Project Objectives- To develop CPU based supercluster.
- The cluster’s computational power would be approximately 7.5TFLOPs.
- Cluster load management
- Cluster job scheduling
- Parallel processing of softwares like ANSYS Fluent, MATLAB, Mathematica
- Benchmarking of cluster
- Literature review
- Hardware assembly
- HPC cluster management tools
- Testing of HPC
The end user will be the researcher, who needs great computational power for the research and simulation works he/she needs to do. With the computing cluster the user will be able to do his/her work smoothly and without bottlenecks. As a result, user will be able to accomplish the task in time.
So any researcher (in any industry i-e any development industry and data analytics) will be benefitted from this project
This project, in this way, is very crucial for development industry
Further once technology is mastered, Pakistan can stop procuring clusters from foreign and hence substantial savings
