Project Summary

Improvement in vehicle efficiency can reduce global fossil fuels consumptions. For that sole reason, so we have to try to design, build and test energy-efficient vehicles. Hence,we have to focus on design processes and the development of a fuel economic vehicle which satisfying the requirements of global needs. So far In this project we have designed the body and chassis of the vehicle. Optimum design for each component is produced through analysis and theoretical calculation in which improvement is made as the project progresses.

Project Objectives

There has been a trend in recent years by manufacturers and regulators alike to increase motor vehicle fuel efficiency and environmental impact. More efficient vehicles will put less stress on sensitive oil distribution networks, will help to conserve the limited fossil fuel reserves, and also drive vehicle sales in the marketplace. Possibly one of the greatest challenges facing the next generation of engineers is how to cope with the possibility of peak oil production. New technological advances must be applied to motor vehicle design in an effort to conserve the limited natural resources of the planet. This will help insure a smooth transition to the post-fossil fuel era.

The motivation for this project came from the desire of not only doing research and producing an optimal vehicle design, but actually gaining hands on experience in producing a fully functional high efficiency vehicle. It is an enticing prospect to test and compete with our product versus other designs. As engineers it is our duty to drive innovation through increasingly superior designs.

Benefits of the Project

The main benefit of this project is from the manufacturing to functional is to make cost efficient and run with the minimal use of fuel that help society in longer terms.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

.The work has presented an effective method of the design and fabrication of prototype vehicle chassis. The work demonstrated how aluminium alloy could be used to construct non-integrated chassis for super mileage vehicles by outlining a load/stress calculation model based on an analytical design approach. The fabrication employed the method of joining two angle bar aluminium materials to form the desired square tube via electric arc welding. The chassis had maximum bending stress of 210 × 106N/m2 and deflection of 65 mm which are within safe limits of the material. The FEA design approach gives similar results as the analytical approach thereby reducing. The efforts spent on the latter approach. After fabrication, the chassis was found to show no cracks as it was able to resist bending and shear from the overall weight of the vehicle and torque from the rotating members. The energy efficiency recorded from the first test run of the vehicle was 250 km/L of gasoline.
