Project Title

Automated Vehicles Entry and Exit Monitoring and Control System

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Efficiency of a security system in any premises is measured by the reliability of its monitored record. Manual monitoring systems at gates lack such reliability due to certain human errors and constraints like security personnel may doze off or he may not memorize each and every vehicle’s entry/exit time or he may overlook some vehicles at peak hours of traffic inflow at gate. So, mostly such manual systems are not capable of recording vehicle's status (vehicle's license plate number, entry/exit time). If there exists some manual recording of vehicles’ data, there is still room for errors. Besides, in case of multiple gates drivers must use the same gate for entrance and exit as they would need to collect their identity credentials (CNIC). This project proposes an automatic record-keeping system in which at entrance certain Image processing tools would be used for Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). The driver would get a receipt with a unique code and then the vehicle will be allowed to enter. The recognized plate number, corresponding code and entry time will be recorded in a log file. At exit after receipt scanning, the exit time will be updated corresponding to vehicle's plate number in the same log file and only then the vehicle will be allowed to leave.

Project Objectives

           At Entrance:

  1. ANPR for license plate recognition.
  2. Generation of a receipt (for driver) having a code, date, entry time and LP number.
  3.  Record of above parameters in a database.
  4.  Automated barrier opening to let the vehicle enter.

           At Exit:

  1.  Scanning of receipt code.
  2.  Updating the vehicle’s status (exit time) in the database.
  3. Automated barrier opening to let the vehicle leave.

Benefits of the Project
  1. Automated record-keeping system leaves no room for human errors that are observed in manual systems.
  2. Compatible monitoring system for single as well as multiple gates.
  3. Record can be used to judge and monitor entered or departed vehicles in a mishap duration.
  4. Flexible to further advancement with integartion of more features.
  5. GUI would help users to search or find through the record easily.
  6. Efficient monitoring system for educational institutions, defence institutions, parking lots etc.
  7. Environment friendly: No usage of contaminating products involved.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable
  1. Raspberry Pi: overall control of integrated system.
  2. Pi Camera
  3. PIR sensor: motion detection of vehicles.
  4. Thermal Printer: printing receipts.
  5. Barriers (motor): automatic opening and closing.
  6. Code scanner: scanning of receipt code.
  1. License plate recognition module.
  2. Database (record of entered/departed vehicles alongwith time and date).
  3. GUI for better usability and final appealing look.
