Project Summary

Automatic driving test system has two parts; a video and car driving data recorder installed on the car , and a driving test simulator in room. In video/ data recorder, the engine rpm, speed, brakes, lights indicators data will be tapped and input to the controller. A camera will be installed in the car to show the external view of the driver. This video and data will be recorded on an SD card. The time stamping of the data and video will be done prior to recording. The recorded data will be brought back to driving test simulator. The video will displayed on a screen and car speed, rpm etc. will be displayed on animated instrument panel.

Project Objectives

  • To collect data from vehicle sensors and record video while driving.
  • To store the data and video on storage device (SD Card).
  • To time stamp the data and video.
  • To design a GUI driving simulation interface that displays the time stamped data and video.

Project Implementation Method

The sensing system on a car will be studied. Afterwards, a suitable controller (micro-controller or FPGA), SD card and Camera will be selected and studied. The data (RPM, Speed, temp, brake and indicator sensors etc.) from car’s sensor and video (external view of the driver) from camera will be tapped and fed into controller. Here, controller will time stamp the data and video. The time stamped data will be stored in SD card by the controller. This module is named as Car Driving Video and Data Recorder. Another controller that will retrieve data from SD card and will display on GUI simulator. GUI simulation interface will look like the driver’s view from its seat. The driving attributes will be shown on animated electronic instrument panel and the video will run as front view of the route from the windscreen. This module is called Car Driving Test Simulator.

Benefits of the Project

The benefits of ADT (Automated driving test) are basically for traffic department to make the driving license practical test’s results more accurate and efficient. After conducting number of tests and dealing with different applicants, the inspector gets fatigued which causes a change in his behavior, it becomes erroneous and itchy that can affect the driving attributes of the applicants. Majority of new applicants are always nervous before the test as their skills are about to be tested and judged in challenging environment. The erroneous behavior of inspector can add to his nervousness. .ADT provides the leniency to inspector to evaluate the test.

With the help of ADT, the inspector can evaluate or review a test later in his cabin even hours after the test as data is saved in Portable Device (SD Card in this case)  and can submit his judgements. If the applicant is not satisfied with the result, the time stamped data can be reviewed in real time. This feature not only clarifies the applicant’s doubts but also provides him an opportunity to judge his mistakes in a better way. In addition, this will make driving test process much more transparent, as the license will only be issued to eligible drivers which will decrease number of road accidents.

The benefits of ADT are not only restricted to traffic department but it also has benefits for those parents who want to keep an eye on the driving behavior of their loved ones as the data is being recorded during driving and parent will be able to see that recorded data easily (if they have this ADT device) any time by inserting SD Card in any compatible device.     

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The Final Deliverable will consist of two parts: a device named as Car Driving Data and Video Recorder that collect driving attributes i.e. data from sensors and route video from camera. It will time stamp the data, video and store it on the memory chip (SD Card). Another controller named as Car Driving Test Simulator will retrieve time stamped data and display it on Animated Driving Test Simulation Interface. This interface will look like the driver’s view from its seat. The driving attributes, such as speed, brakes, engine rpm and indicators etc. will be shown on animated electronic instrument panel and the video will run as front view of the route from the windscreen. Here, the inspector can analyze the driving skills of the driver by inspection.
