Project Summary

When talking about indoor navigation, we mention navigation technologies not including GPS, thanks to its limitations in large complexes and building. These technologies are utilized in various use cases from finding your terminal with ease in an unknown airport, to locating the needed store during a mall with only half-hour to spare. Getting to a grocery you're not conversant in , are going to be a breeze with a product navigation app. The chances are endless.


An indoor navigation application must be ready to guide a user between small corridors and rooms, which isn't easy to try to to with the technology at hand. The appliance makes use of an inside positioning system (IPS), which will use differing types of sensory information to locate objects or people inside an outsized complex.

We are using AR indoor navigation technology, on the opposite hand, is sort of complex because it consists of three modules which need to be factored in; and these include: Positioning, Mapping, and Rendering.

Project Objectives

No efficient and excellent indoor positioning system has been developed which will be used for navigation. However, people have experimented with many various technologies to make an IPS, like Wifi and Bluetooh, but also magnetic positioning, dead reckoning, positioning supported visual markers, and combinations of those . Some need extra hardware to function, but others can compute of the box.


SLAM ( Stimultanious localization and mapping ) alogrithm available in ARCore from Google with the following main objectives:

  • To keep the track of the person in unknown place.
  • Make it easy for the user to find the required destination in an unknown place. 
  • PathFinding
  • Make an augmented reality (AR) view for the path towards the destination.
  • Placing the 3D objects in the environment where you can walk around.

Project Implementation Method

 ARCore based localization

  •  Motion tracking
  •  Map creation and scaling

 QR code (re) positioning

  •   Start position synchronization is handled in this step.
  •    QR codes are translated to simple strings , which are identical to the names used for the locations on map.
  •    Reposition the user with QR code.

The navigation (NavMesh)

  •  Finding an optimal route to a destination
  •  Path Finding

The AR view

  •  Placing the 3D objects in the environment where you can walk around.
  •  Calculation of angle and placing 3D arrow in environment.

Benefits of the Project

  •  Visual positioning systems (VPS) are better suited for larger areas.
  •   Wi-Fi positioning systems can be expensive to set up and maintain.
  •   Locations all have different accuracy thresholds.
  •   AR visual markers can accurately map out smaller areas.
  •   Wi-Fi RTT solutions are more accurate than Wi-Fi protected setups (WPS).
  •   Augmented Reality Shows Promising Results for Indoor Navigation.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The proposed solution states that you only need an ARCore supported device for the destination searching and the path finding.
Dividing a project into phases makes it possible to lead it in the best possible direction.
It will divide the total workload of the project, by dividing its components. As their first comes the idea of the project and then leads it to the implementation.
