The proposed project seeks to investigate the development of a dual active bridge (DAB) DC/DC converter. The previous DAB converters had the issue of larger energy feedback thus, the proposed control scheme tackles this problem in order to be useful in DC-powered applications. The project proposes a dual active bridge converter in an isolated DC/DC converter consisting of two full-bridge DC/AC converters and isolation using a high frequency (HF) transformer. To provide reliability and endurance/flexibility to grid disturbances the dual active bridge converter will connect a battery energy storage system to a DC bus.
Dual-Active bridge converter has a more significant number of applications due to its ability to allow power flow in both directions i.e., from source to load and load to source. Being a high-frequency switching converter it has the advantage of being smaller in size and weight as compared to other conventional converters.
A dual-Active bridge converter can be used mainly in Electrical / Hybrid Vehicles, where power flow control is of prime importance to use power efficiently. Similarly, it can also be used to charge different Electrical vehicles using solar power, by using advanced algorithms maximum power can be harvested as well as by using a feedback system different disturbances can be controlled. It can also be used to connect a battery energy storage system to a DC bus to provide a high level of reliability and resilience to grid disturbances.
The final product will be a prototype presentation of the Dual-Active bridge converter, enclosed in a metallic casing. The input voltage rating of the product will be 12 Volts, and the output voltage will be 24 Volts, capable of carrying a max load
of 500 watts.
