Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryA vehicle tracking system is very useful for tracking the movement of a vehicle from any location at any time. An efficient vehicle tracking system is designed and implemented for tracking the movement of any equipped vehicle from any location at any time. The proposed system made good use of popular technology that combines a smartphone with a microcontroller. The designed in vehicle device works using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) technology that is one of the most common ways for vehicle tracking. The device is embedded inside a vehicle those positions is to be determined and tracked in real time. A microcontroller is used to control the GPS receiver and GSM module. The vehicle tracking system uses the GPS module to get geographic coordinates at regular time interval. The GSM module is used to transmit and update the vehicle location to a database. A smartphone application also developed for continuously monitoring the vehicle location. The Google Map API is used to display vehicle on the map in the smartphone application. Thus, user able to continuously monitor a moving vehicle on demand using smartphone and determine the estimated distance and time for the vehicle to arrive at a given destination.The GPS based low cost intelligent vehicle tracking system can be successfully designed and applied in the UET busses. If we implemented in a well-planned manner, it will bring significant revolutionary enhancement in the transportation.
Project ObjectivesTo develop a low-cost efficient vehicle tracking system for the buses of UET so that low number of busses could be used efficiently and Management could track easily.
- To accurately get the coordinates.
- Update coordinates continuously.
- Show tracking on smart phone application with Google Map API.
GPS vehicle tracking device
This is a device that acts as a geo-location fetcher, motion sensor and recorder of a gamut of information. When installed inside the car it starts gathering data on vehicle speed, vehicle location. The device receives signals from the GPS satellites and calculates the position of the vehicle in terms of latitudes and longitudes. This is why it is capable of providing real-time location information of the vehicle or the cargo. The raw data which is generated by the device does not occur in a human understandable Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore Narowal Campus format. The data needs to be processed and transformed into a form that makes sense to the end-user. A GPS receiver performs the responsibility of processing and storage of data.
GPS receiver
A GPS receiver has got three main responsibilities-- 1.Receiving data from the GPS device
2.Storage and processing of data
3.Passing on the processed data to the user
It runs on a software application that processes the raw data, decodes the information and transforms it into a form, comprehensible by the user. The end-result of the processing is the Solution which the end-user is supposed to get from the GPS solution provider. He can receive the information in the form of an SMS alert, a routine notification e-mail, a weekly or monthly vehicle history tracking report or simply through thematic mapping of real-time locations of the vehicles.
End-user device:
The end-user receives and views the information on his device with the help of the User Interface. The device can be a desktop, laptop or any other mobile gadget. It remains connected to the GPS receiver that is responsible to pass on the information in the form of an SMS or e-mail. In case of any emergency, the end-user device instantly receives the SOS sent from the vehicle location.

So, the vehicle tracking system are getting popular day by day not only in metropolitan areas but also in small cities. This system is completely integrated and it becomes possible to the user to track their vehicle very easily at any time and from anywhere. As the vehicle theft is increasing day by day but due to this people wasn’t avoid using vehicles but they found an efficient way to keep an eye on their vehicle without being very close to them. These systems keep a good control on the thefts and help avoiding them to some extent. Basically, in all these systems the GPS and GSM are used to track the vehicle. Using this system, the user determines the position of the vehicle, and the distance completed by it. In an institute like UET Narowal there are number of busses and other faculty vehicles. If this system implements, we can use vehicle efficiently and could keep track of vehicles therefore improper use of vehicles could be prohibited. The administration is able to access the position of their vehicle at any instant of time. This system is reliable and very secure. Upgrading this setup is very easy which makes it open to future requirements without the need of rebuilding everything from scratch, which also makes it more efficient. Day scholar students can use this app to keep track of daily route bus to university.
