Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryMosquitoes are considered to be among the biggest disease spreading flying insects causing worldwide health hazards. In Pakistan, Dengue fever is an infectious viral disease transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus female mosquitoes. Manual identification of dengue mosquito is hard and dangerous leading to severe health risks. In this project, we are proposing an automated system that is able to identify aedes species that is the dengue causing mosquitoes species among Anopheles and Culex species using the acoustic recordings of their wingbeat frequency. We will demonstrate the proposed approach on a standard dataset and compare it to human annotations to determine accuracy.
Project Objectives- Identify mosquitoes species using their sounds
- Help setup acoustic traps for dangerous mosquitoes
- Identify dengue and malaria causing mosquitoes
We will implement machine learning techniques that takes mosquitoes songs audio files as input and use these sounds for training. Then we will calculate distance (euclidean/cosine similarity/mahalanobis) to classify unknown mosquitoe species. We will test the results using on a dataset that we will collect using microphones attached to a raspberry pi and solar panel to avoid human intervention. The sounds will be annotated by specialists from entomolog department.
Building Mosquito Monitor: This mosquito monitor would include a mobile phone that runs the mosquito monitor app/, a weather proof case to avoid damage from extreme weather conditions, an external microphone in case of no direct power supply. To record environmental data, each monitor will include an Arduino board kit with sensors such as temperature, humidity, air quality and air pressure. In the areas with optimal network connectivity the data would be upload on the cloud in the real-time. However, in the forests where there is no area coverage, we are trying to find other possible ways of transferring data to the cloud for storage, annotation and further analysis.
Storing Audio segments on the cloud server: If the Mosquito Monitor is within the range of a data network it will automatically upload the recordings on to the cloud server. Alternatively, we can insert a SIM card and it will upload the recordings if it has cell coverage. If there is no connectivity the Monitor would store 3 months of recordings which will then be uploaded when the device connects to the internet.
This project is the extension of an approved ignite's project in 2019.

The final software would be delivered as an android app that can be used by anyone from anywhere to identify mosquitoes around them. The app will take mosquito sound recorded from mobile device as input and classify it based on the trained dataset. Sounds will be recorded on Mosquito Monitors build with Arduino boards. Recordings will be transferred on the cloud server using Internet. In case of no connectivity to internet , Recording can be saved on the device and transferred when network connectivity available .
