Vehicle Speed Detetctor
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryProject Summary:
Road accidents are a direct consequence of uncontrolled traffic flow and poorly monitored speed of vehicles. Therefore, detecting vehicle speed in an automated way is important to save human life. In this project we are designing a speed detection system, it detects the speed of a vehicle using Infrared Sensor (IR). Infrared sensor is an electronic device that emits infrared light in order to sense some aspects of the surroundings. IR sensors have two parts: a light emitting diode (LED) and a receiver. When an object comes close to the sensor, the infrared light from the LED reflects off of the object and is detected by the receiver. Cheap solutions based on this technology can be deployed frequently on roads to detect over speeding.
Project ObjectivesProject Objectives:
There are definite rules laid out by authorities about driving cars on roads. The most common rule in any country is speed limits on certain roads i.e. you will be in violation of the law if your car speed exceeds this limit. In order to detect the speed of a moving car, patrolling officers usually depend on a handheld gun that works on Radar Technology or LIDAR Technology. This is a tedious process as the officer has to manually check for over speeding for each vehicle. What if the Car Speed Detection is made automatic? Now days automatic speed detector is already installed in all around Pakistan in motorways and in major cities like (Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi) but the problem is we have to buy these products from China or USA and it costs us about 4k$ our goal for this project is to design automated Vehicle Speed Detector which will be made in Pakistan with at a reduced cost.
Project Implementation MethodMtehadology:
An infrared sensor (IR) is an electronic device that emits infrared rays in order to sense some aspects of the surroundings. An IR sensor can measure the heat of an object as well as detects the motion. We are using two IR sensors in this project. We will place these two IR sensors in poles at roadside, the distance between the sensors will be 300 meters (0.3km) which is fixed.
Timer will start as soon as the vehicle approaches first sensor and it will calculate the time taken by the vehicle to reach the second sensor.
Once we get time it is easy to calculate speed by the given formula.
Speed = distance / time
The speed will be display on dot matrix with emoticon on normal speed happy face will appear and on over speeding angry emoji will appear.
Benefits of the ProjectProject Benefits:
- First Vehicle speed detector which will be made in Pakistan.
- Cost efficient as compared to other speed detectors that are currently in use in Pakistan.
- Good accuracy as compared to other sensors that could be used in this project.
- It has no bad effect on environment because it does not cause any kind of pollution.
- Not effected by fog, rain and smog.
- Housing societies, Universities can install these speed detectors for soft reminders to reduce speed.
Technical Details:
Following are the hardware tools that would be used in this project:
- IR Sensors x 2
- Arduino UNO
- Buzzer
- LED Dot matrix
- Breadboard
We will design vehicle speed detector using sharp GP2Y0A710K0F Infrared (IR) sensor.
Following are some details of the sensor:
- Analog output type.
- Measuring distance is 100 to 550 cm.
- Operates at supply voltage 4.5 to 5V.
- Consumption current is typ. 30 mA.
Here are some specifications of Arduino Uno:
- It has 14 digital input/output pins and 6 analog input pins. As we are using gp2 analog sensor that why we will be using analog pins.
- Operating voltage of 5V.
- Flash memory of 32KB.
- Clock speed of 16 MHz
For software language we are using embedded C
