Project Summary

Sustainable agriculture requires implementation of intelligent strategies in order to avoid any hindrance in crop. The main problem found in any crop is the production of weeds which may damage the crop.       In wheat crop infestation of weeds in wheat is one of the major constraints that consumes water and plant nutrient causing 40-60% reduction in its productivity. Controlling the production of those weeds is basic and difficult task for any farmer and it is most important to detecting them out and control their production at right time so that their production never get worse as so then it will effect the productivity of wheat crop.         Our project is to design a system that survey the field captures the images at different stages of crop by the help of those images weed can easily detect out through image processing techniques at proper time. For this purpose Unmanned Aerial Vehicle will use which will capture the certain images of specific area of field and through image processing system find out the presence of weed in that crop as weed and wheat are very hard to differentiate easily .Thus this project will help in detecting out those weeds at proper time because once weed produce it spread very quickly. After detection we can perform any type of weeding process thus saving other area from getting weed. System block diagram is proposed in figure 1:

Project Objectives

It is aim to develop a system which can monitor weeds in wheat crop through Image processing system that can detect the presence of weed through the high level RGB images capture by UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle).As it provide high spatial resolution images compared to satellite platform main advantage of using UAV is that it provides the user with the ability to collect the needed images any time.Main objectives of this project are:

  • To survey the wheat crop during various stages of production of crop.
  • To fly UAV over the wheat field for capturing images and develop the image data base.
  • By those RGB images we will detect the weeds in crop through image processing system.
  • Through that process we can easily monitor weeds and tell farmer about that area after that farmer can apply any weeding method for the removal of those weeds at that specific area thus saving other area to be weed and to be chemicalized.

Project Implementation Method

This project is based on image processing technique. We will survey the wheat field at different spans of time.A UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) will fly over the specific area of wheat field capture images of crop from each side we want after that we will have data base of those images now those capture images will fed as input to the processing algorithm.That image processing consist of certain step to identify weed as weeds and wheat are too much similar that they are hard to differentiate .First step is Pre-processing which is used to facilitate image segmentation.As in RGB images there is high correlation between R,G and B components that is why these images first need colour space transformation. Then there is image segmentation process that is process of grouping related pixels together to form connected object that process is used for discriminating between plant and background i.e soil.In the image segmentation process however we have separate background from image but weed and wheat are still mixed for their discrimination we will go to feature extraction this will last one process consist of some visual characteristics i.e Biological morphology ,Spectral Features ,Visual textures as weed and wheat are very hard to differentiate analyzing each and every feature is so much important.In the end there is classification.System flow diagram is shown in fig 2:

Benefits of the Project

In Agriculture there is always need of continuous monitoring it takes 6 months for wheat crop to get mature in this long period a farmer had to go through many challenges now finding any by product that decreases its productivity and spraying the whole field is not suitable for crop also the environment .   Normally what thing is done that either in field weeds are detect when it has been so late mean when whole area have been covered with weeds or second if they detect weeds at any side they spray whole field either other side is suffering from those weeds or not they just spray the whole field .In both scenarios their is huge use of chemicals that can effect the field also the environment.This project UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle ) based weed detection through Image processing can help in a way that we can survey fields at different times capture images through UAV and finding out the Weed .After detection of those weeds through that image processing system any weeding method can be apply for removal of those weeds or can spray that specific weed area thus saving other area to be weed ,chemicalized ,save Farmer efforts and time and most important of all saving wheat productivity .

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final project will be a UAV based Image Processing system which will capture images of specific site of wheat field at different stages of crop and will help in detection of weeds through those image processing technique at proper time so that saving the other area of field from weeds thus saving wheat productivity.
