Universal Wireless Charging
Summary
We have planned, designed, executed, and tested a compact dock having the ability to simultaneously charge multiple types of electronic devices ranging from smartwatches to laptops. Gadgets that do not have integrated wireless charging capability can be charged using external receivers. Thus, universal in nature. The external receiver's design is still in production.
Objective:
To implement a universal wireless charger, with the ability to charge multiple smart devices simultaneously and without perfect alignment between transmitter and receiver coils.
Our Design:
•We will implement a system which will be compatible with both inductive coupling and magnetic resonance.
•Medium-power devices will be using inductive charging
•Low-power devices will be using magnetic resonance
Motivation:
Background:
•During 19th century Nikola Tesla demonstrated magnetic resonant coupling – the ability to transmit electricity through the air by creating a magnetic field between two circuits, a transmitter and a receiver.
•The first application of inductive charging used in the United States was performed by J.G. Bolger, F.A. Kirsten, and S. Ng in 1978. They made an electric vehicle powered with a system at 180 Hz with 20 kW.
•In 2006, MIT began using a resonant coupling. They were able to transmit a large amount of power without radiation over a few meters. This proved to be better for commercial needs, and it was a major step for inductive charging.
Magnetic Induction:
Resonant inductive coupling or magnetic phase synchronous coupling is a phenomenon with inductive coupling where the coupling becomes stronger when the "secondary" (load-bearing) side of the loosely coupled coil resonates. A resonant transformer of this type is often used in analog circuitry as a bandpass filter. Resonant inductive coupling is also used in wireless power systems for portable computers, phones, and vehicles. WiTricity type magnetic resonance coupling systems add another set of resonant coils on the "primary" (power source) side which pair with the coils on the secondary (load-bearing) side.
