Project Summary

From the past few years, the automotive industry has shown significant advancement towards the future of self-driving cars. Companies are investing trillions of dollars in the research process for the betterment and to overcome the technological issues in the process. The purpose of this project is to make the vehicle intelligent enough so that it can bypass the hurdles as well as it can detect the objects and can perform the actions accordingly. It will also be able to read signboards, traffic signals as well as the detection of road lane. It will help to increase the efficiency of traffic flow smoothly that would surely result in reducing accident ratios. It will make traveling much safer and convenient. Also it will reduce the manpower and assure the safety of passenger as well as the pedestrians. By the help of an Arduino chip we will be controlling the controls of our car that are mainly throttle, steering and braking.

Project Objectives

  1. Autonomous car main objective is to reduce instances of accident that are caused by human error.
  2. Autonomous car will be able to detect  all obstacle or hurdles that came in front of the car.
  3. It also have a ability to detect the traffic signals and follow that signals according the rules.
  4. It  will  determines the road by itself and detect its line of motion itself.
  5. It will also take the turn when the turn came.

Project Implementation Method

First of all, we will be doing the simulation of autonomous car using ROS and then we will be designing our hardware. The hardware designing is the crucial part because we have to take all the components and assemble them and configure them. the simulated code if runs correctly will be written on raspberry pi and will be tested and the autonomous car will be trained accordingly. 

Benefits of the Project

Here are some of the ways in which self-driving cars can be helpful to change the world:

Safety: According to a survey, about 1.24 million people are killed in the road accidents every year which is the proof that we are no good at driving. Unlike the conventional drivers, the autonomous car will never drive drunk and will never use mobile phones during driving that makes the autonomous car more safe.

Congestion or Traffic issues: As we see that the number of vehicles on road are growing day by day resulting in traffic jams and congestion but the idea of autonomous car is that it can efficiently drive according to the traffic rules and will reduce the traffic issues.

Parking: whenever we go outside, the main problem in our head is that whether we would be able to find a safe parking or not. Self-driving cars will be able to park them on their own making easy for us.

Free Time: We usually waste a lot of time driving a car. Think about how easy would it be for us if a car is driving itself and we are just sitting at the back seat relaxing. The time we waste in driving can be utilized somewhere else.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final product will be efficient enough to detect the road lanes and navigate accordingly and detect the traffic signals and act accordingly. The tools and technologies used are:
