Project Summary

With the motivation of providing an improved lifestyle and enhancing the standard of living, research has been made in the field of crime mapping and prediction systems all around the world.  Work is being done to eradicate the social evils from society to have a progressive approach as human beings. The conventional and age-old arrangement of knowledge and criminal record support has neglected to satisfy the prerequisites of the current wrongdoing situation. Manual procedures neither give precise, dependable and far reaching information nonstop nor does it help in pattern expectation and choice help, The answer for this ever-expanding issue lies in the digital logging and mapping of criminal records by authorities for better utilization and implementation of available resources. Thus the need of crime mapping or predictive policing measures arises.
 In countries such as UK, USA, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland much progress has been made towards crime mapping and predictive systems, but Pakistan still has a long way to go. Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) propelled its crime mapping framework in 2013 to halfway accumulate First Information Reports (FIR) of violations from 83 police headquarters of Lahore which were recently enlisted physically. This undertaking later extended to entire Punjab area. However, the system is only for the use of law enforcement and brings no closure to the general public in any regard. The system happens to be only available as a desktop application. 
Growing from that; our work is focused on providing an effective service to the people of Pakistan. The outcome of the project will be a successful crime mapping, analysis and prediction system that will utilize the strengths of Machine Learning algorithms. With a similar aim C-MAPS Lahore will provide a visual analysis of the criminal records collected from 24 different police stations embodying crime mapping which is the core of this project.The system will analyze the Lahore crime data of an entire year for specific areas utilizing Machine Learning algorithms.

In this project, an android application will be made available to the public with the features of crime mapping, analysis and prediction. This is will be very useful to the public for making life decisions such as choosing the safest commute to buying a house in a safe neighbourhood. This app will provide accurate information without breaching the privacy of any individual. The main source of the data for the application will be a web portal that will be used by the law enforcement agencies. With keen data anaysis across various categories, the safety and reputation of an area will be maintained. Moreover, it will bring satisfcation to the public to be able to make educated decisions for their safety. And likewise, the law enforcemnet agencies will be able to better view the perfomance of their subordinates and identify problem areas through crime hotspots. 

Project Objectives

Following are the Objectives of the project :

1. To help law enforcement forces in making keen and calculated decisions for the better utilization of the scarce and limited resources for crime subdual.
2. To create a general feeling of goodwill amongst the forces and the general public by providing an easy controlled access to the data through the application.
3. To remove any misconception the public might have regarding the crime rate of an area.
4. To provide policy manufacturers gears for the better understanding of spatial patterns in crimes.
5. To identify crime hotspots through mapping and provide the law enforcement agencies the knowledge to work those areas specifically.

Project Implementation Method

The project will be implemented in the following steps:

Data Collection:

We will take the data from 24 different police stations around Lahore and will arrange an excel sheet of it.

Pre Processing:

Then the data will be pre-processed thoroughly to check for any null entries

.Feature Extraction:

In this step we will remove the unnecessary features/columns in the data and decide which features we will be using for our target of crime mapping and prediction. We will also generate new features that are the most discriminating ones for better evaluation.

Implementation of Machine Learning Algorithms:

The data stored in the database will be then loaded and used by machine learning algorithms for the purpose of classification.

Data Analysis:

Multiple trends in the data will be identified that will help the law enforcement agencies to better deploy their forces and utilize their scarce resources efficiently. The general public will also become more aware and will be able to base their decisions on factual information.

 Mapping:

All the collected data will also be presented in the form of a graph for easy identification of crime hotspots.

Prediction:

Based on the trends of the collected data, prediction will be made in the future growth of certain crimes in particular areas or genrally. This will help the law enforcement agencies to deploy personnel before the predicted  crime growth in certain areas. The genral public can also make educated decisions regarding real estate etc. 

 
Output in Android App:

Everything will be presented in the form of an android application and available to the genral public and forces alike. 

Benefits of the Project

The core motivation of the project is to create an overall safer environment and to reduce the crime rate by providing law enforcement agencies with the correct knowledge to utilize their resources efficiently and effectively.   
This system will also serve as a gateway to future police systems based for not only a city but the entire country. However, this is just a prototype and we will be working with only 24 areas of Lahore and not the entire city.Moreover, this system is not only for law enforcement agencies but also for the use of general public. Usually people have many misconceptions about the crime rate of certain areas. Their knowledge is based on myths or rumors rather than actual facts. It has also been seen that usually people's estimates about the criminal activity of an area are much higher than the real numbers. Our application will act as a reliable source for the general public. They will be able to make their decisions based on concrete facts and information and plan their lives accordingly. From choosing the safest commute, to  choosing the safest hour of the day, to buying property. Every decision could be made under the light of the data available through our application.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable will be an Android application for which android studio will be used. The application will also be connected to a web portal which will only be available to the authorities for official data entry. The application will have many features such as data analysis and statistics, crime prediction, crime mapping and some helplines and contact details for law enforcement agencies and such. 

The web portal will require login credentials to get access to. An online database i.e. Mongodb will be used with the portal. MondoDB, express ,Node and Ejs will be used as the technologies for the web portal.
