Therapeutic Ultrasonic Machine
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryAn ultrasound therapy machine is often used by physiotherapists to reduce pain, increase circulation, and to increase the mobility of soft tissues. The transducer will be attached to an ultrasound machine and placed at the affected part of the body. The machine will be set to the appropriate depth and intensity of required ultrasonic waves.
Our machine will curb the import of such machines in Pakistan.
Project ObjectivesTo Build a Therapeutic Ultrasonic Machine with the following features
-
Semiconductor Based Signal Generator
-
Both 1 MHz and 3 MHz output
-
Amplitude Control and Calibration
-
Timer function
-
Switching Function between the two frequencies
-
Pulsing Output Function
-
Digital Output
To Build a Therapeutic Ultrasonic Machine in the following steps
Semiconductor Based Signal Generator
We would use a semiconductor-based signal generator to produce the 1 MHz and 3 MHz signals. The current designs manufactured in Pakistan use tubes that have a lesser life.
Signal Amplification
After producing that frequency, we amplify the signal with a variable control function for intensity variation.
Controller Design
We would design a microcontroller-based controller to provide the user interface and to control higher-level functions.
Body/ Housing and PCB Design
Once all the features are tested on simulation and breadboard based design, we would design the housing of the whole machine and the PCB of our design circuit. We would follow the applicable safety and durability standards applicable for our machine.
Calibration with Probe
Once the complete machine is operational we would calibrate the output power.
Benefits of the Project
The Need for Biomedical Devices is ever increasing. Physical Therapy Practice is slowly getting more and more attraction in Pakistan. 95% of the Therapeutic Ultrasonic Machines are imported. We propose to design, manufacture, and test (in the lab) an ultrasonic therapy machine
By working on this Device we can develop knowledge on Ultrasound and wave generation which can be used in other medical devices.
Ultrasonic Therapy Machines produce (with the help of the probe) 1 MHz and 3 MHz ultrasonic vibrations to enhance healing of muscle damage.
1 MHz has a higher penetration which means it is used to heal deeper wounds while 3MHz works for wounds near the surface of the skin.
Our Machine would have the following features.
Timer Function
The timer function is used to automatically switch off the output after a given amount of time. The user would be able to set the time using a double 7 segment display.
Pulse and Continuous Function.
Sometimes it is better for the patient to receive pulses of radiation rather than continuous. This function would allow both these options as required by the user.
Calibration of Probe
The Output power of the probe is not calibrated in most of the therapy machines currently used in Pakistan. We would calibrate our machine to provide precise power output as needed.
Digital Control
All locally manufactured machines analog but our machine would be digital.
Back-up Battery
We want to add a back-up battery to allow up to 30 minutes of operation on the battery.
Intensity Variation
Our machine would provide variable intensity output ranging from 0 - 5 W/cm^2
