This project takes the public sector into account especially when considering emergency situations. Such as the traffic system  where an ambulance faces many hindrances. The problem that arises because of traffic for the ambulance service is loss of life before reaching the hospital. Moreover, the solution supports modern automated traffic control systems like E-Challan with enhanced management of traffic to make way for the ambulance service. The project is named as the ‘TPL System’. It stands for The Pink Light system where pink denotes to ambulance and light denotes to the innovation it provides.  To implement the project, it was further divided into three core methodologies. First, a simple android application, second a server-side and lastly on road model which comprises of hardware components like RFID scanners, RFID tags, arduino micro controllers e.t.c.  Furthermore, the fully automated TPL system  is aimed at saving lives lost due to heavy traffic on the traffic signals. If implemented the system will reduce ambulance arrival time, maintain basic security for ambulance, support traffic control, prevent general public from getting caught when they are giving way to ambulance via E-Challan while being cost effective and feasible for a country like Pakistan.. TPL System shall also provide many of the additional features to assist the ambulance and ambulance pilots, which will eventually take the ambulance service for the public to the whole new level. State of the art integration of the IOT, the system fulfills the purpose very efficiently.

Project Objectives

The aim is to automate a system  to assist the ambulances. Consequently, many of the lives can be saved without any delay. We intend to automate “The Pink Light System” to reduce the loss of human life. In the existing system there is no such automated assistance available for the ambulance except some traditional ambulance priorities. It was out of reach of the traffic authorities to guide the traffic at every traffic signal in favor of the ambulance.

  • A simple yet effective design for assistance of the public vehicles to clear the path for the ambulance.
  • The main goal of our work is to provide priority to the ambulance among all vehicles.
  • Ambulance detection.
  • Introduction of Pink light for ambulance.
  • Reducing the chances of the public vehicles rushing to cross the intersection when the signal is opened in favor of the ambulance.

Project Implementation Method

At first, the methodology of the system was designed to use radio frequency antennas. The antennas were to be mounted on both the ambulance and the target traffic signal pole. Antennas are to work as sender for ambulance and reciever for the traffic signal pole respectively. The issues raised when it was discovered that we were unable to detect the exact direction of the sender. Possible solution for this problem were to use directional antennas. High end Yaggi antennas were the best fit. But the problem remained that it cannot be feasible for the enovironment here in Pakistan as it will extend the cost at a large scale. Maintenance of that system will also be costly and might require necessity of experts involvement.

Shifting towards the second methodology we chose also concluded in as not much feasible to use. Using GPS Services require more stable connectivity and will create a totally software based solution that might take long algorithms and produce delays for much longer period. Detecting the ambulance’s location and opening the exact signal will be a tough job in a worst case scenario.  The solution is based for emergency services. It means, we cannot compromise on the risks involved.The whole system might go down during maintenance resulting in the problems with the whole traffic control system. The maintenance will also go quite expensive and will require only specialists to perform the task. The requirements tell us that we need a reliable solution, sort of an easy plug and play. Hence, we found our final methodology.

Initially, only the core components were implemented for experiment purposes which include,

  • A simple android application that contains only a request button to open the traffic signal.
  • A firebase demo project for the authentication.
  • An generic RFID scanner, RFID tag, arduino nano microcontroller with a node MCU.

The purpose was to make the workflow clean and clear. By multiple experiments of developing single ended or small one road environments we concluded to what would be more feasible for the environment requiring large scalability.

Making it to the final working prototype, the solution was enhanced to its actual paces. Professional development of TPLASA, TPLORO and TPLSVR took place. A model for a four way intersection is made along with all capabilities for the functional and non-functional requirements.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The system comprise of three modules,

  • TPLASA (The Pink Light-Ambulance Side Application)

In this module, we made an android application. The application will be used on the main infotainment display mounted in the ambulance or by the authorized ambulance support staff or driver only. After some legal/security verifications the user can use the features and facilities while on any emergency mission i.e the pink light request to turn on the traffic signal.

  • TPLORO (The Pink Light-On Road Operation)

RFID Scanners, Tags, Microcontrollers, Traffic Lights along with the wires for their integration belong to this module. TPLORO is the module which works on road for the guidance of traffic lights in favor of the ambulance. A working prototype model is created with an approach of actual on road scenario.

  • TPLSVR (The Pink Light-Server)

The backbone of the system includes the main real time database. TPLSVR is a junction for both TPLASA and TPLORO. TPLSVR is aiding as a mediator in integration of TPLASA and TPLORO. A desktop application is developed to maintain control of the system and to be used by the Admin.
