Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryLiquid metallurgy route for the casting of metals and its alloys is one of the commonly used casting techniques. In order to acheive different properties of the materials by adding different reinforcements into it, requires more controlled conditions and properly designed heat treatment processes. It is therefore, needed to have an equipment which is not only capabile of acheiving high temperatures such as 1000 degree celcius but also maintain and control the inner environment of the chamber. Further, uniform mixing (stirring) of the reinforcement is also required to attain better distrubution with consequently improved mechanical properties. In this project, we are going to design and develope an electric stir casitng machine having high operating temperatures (up to 1000 degree celcius) and advanced safety and control features.
Project ObjectivesTo design and develope a stir casitng machine with following objectives,
1. To acheive 1000 degree celcius operating temperature using electric power.
2. To maintain the required temperature for the given period of time.
3. To introduce automatic stirring mechanism with control system
4. To introduced advanced safety feature like automatic circuit-breakage, alarm (beep) indicator for malfunctioning, remote controlled ON/OFF system.
5. To add wifi connectivity to the control panel in order to mointor the machine using mobile app.
Project Implementation MethodThe methodology of acheiving the set objectives is described as under,
First phase is comprised of analytical calculations and designing. The calculations are comprised of finding the electrical resistance of the wire, required length of the wire, number of turns in wire, wire rating, power required, voltage and ampere measurements. Further, the apparatus will be designed using SOLIDWORKS. The critical component(s) will be indentified and analysis will be performed using ANSYS thermal work bench. Similarly, material selection will be done prior to the simulations.
In second phase, the machine will be developed as per design and calculations. Materials selection will be finalized based on the data of phase-1.
In stage three, advanced control panel will be installed with wifi controlling system, PID controller, solid state relays, timer, voltmeters, ammerters, switches, magnetic contractors etc.
In final stage, the machine will be tested and commissioned.
Benefits of the ProjectThis project has the following benefits,
1. It will be addtion to the Material Testing Lab of the Mechacnial Engineering Department of CECOS Univeristy for casting new materials with stirrer mechanism in oder to acheive uniform distribution of the reinforcement in the metals and its alloys.
2. The introduction of advanced controling features with wifi connectivity will make it one kind of the product that can be utilized in the future industiral application for casting different parts of the automobile, aerospace and others,
3. Safety is kept at priority with modern features like automatic sensing of malfunctioning and dispatch information on the app connected. Same can be acheived with the server of the university as well.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable1. 2800 watts electric stir casting machine.
2. Control panel with wifi controls through mobile app.
3. Apparatus will be incorporated with advanced safety features.
4. 120 watt motors.
5. 25 mm diameter stirrer for uniform mixing of the reinforcements in the liquid metal and its alloys.
