The project is specifically designed for the visually impaired students to able them to study through traditional books instead of special books (Barielle). The Proposed system consists of pi camera mounted on a cap, Bluetooth connected headphones, Raspberry Pi – 4, MPPT, Solar plates, Battery pack etc.
As the main focus of this project were the visually impaired students, who due to their disability, were destined to be left far behind from the society. This project will able them to hear and understand the text written in the books and they no longer need special books, braille, which they had been using for years.
The project will be a healthy addition to science and technology and will be very helpful for the society.
The project has the following objectives:
The project is implemented using different technologies including image processing and machine learning. The whole process of text recognition, i.e., converting the written text into audio will take place in four steps. In the first step, the camera will capture an image of the page. In the second step, the text will be enclosed within boundaries. In the third step, the text will be extracted via image segmentation. In the fourth step, the text will be converted into audio. The text can be converted in all available languages via google API, but it only takes the input text in English language which is the limitation of our project.
For the system to identify the captured text, we’ve applied machine learning model. We’ve used sufficient data to train the model to make it clearly identify the text and then we’ve tested back the model to check the efficacy of the model. The results of the trained model are very encouraging.
The target audience of the project are visually impaired students. The benefits of this project are as follows:

The technologies and softwares used in this project are open cv, numpy, python, a Text-to-speech Synthesizer (TTS) software, which is used for converting the details of the detected object (in text format) to speech output.
