Project Summary

Chickens are the most common and widely raised
poultry birds. And thus nurturing these birds for mass
demand has become one of the most flourishing and
traditional business initiatives. Some chickens take less
time to become mature and generate profit. In order to
get a satisfactory profit out of the farming business, it is
vital to maintaining the inner environment of the farm,
which requires proper temperature, optimum light
intensity and well maintained hygiene. Proper hygiene
and care can minimize diseases and illness in poultry. If a
machine can automatically control all the crucial factors
and other environmental factors of a poultry farm, it may
reduce the overall cost in the long run by simplifying the
control and maintenance of the farmers. Smart or
automated poultry farm is one of the most splendid creations
of modern technologies which are now highly accepted
in different parts of the world. Developing country
like Pakistan where the poultry farming is well
accepted and also very grooming, it is vital to
take initiatives which can overcome the demerits found
in the conventional poultry farms. It was observed by
close research work that the traditional method of poultry
farming has some very concerning drawbacks that are
needed to be solved.
By taking all the above factors into consideration, this project
Simply the design and implementation of a
poultry farm incorporating the new technology.

Project Objectives

  • To monitor and control the temperature and humidity with the help of latest sensors.
  • To detect the ammonia gas and take step to prevent it, as it is harmful for the chickens.
  • To monitor and control the feeding system automatically.
  • To automate the cleanliness system.
  • We will try to make IOT based system, so that all the information regarding the conditions of poultry and chickens will be reported directly to the poultry owner.
  • To produce a healthy and nutritious chicken for the sake of public.

Project Implementation Method

This project uses regulated 12V & 5V, 1A & 2A power supply.
We have used 7812 three terminal voltage regulator for
voltage regulation. Function of Bridge type full wave
rectifier is to rectify the ac output of secondary of 220/12V
step down transformer. We have also used various sensors
for developing this system which help us automate various
tasks. Temperature Sensor DHT11 is a common
temperature sensor. It is easily available in market. Voltage
range is 4v to 30v. Here we have provided 5v. Range of
temperature is between 0-50°C. Level Sensor is used
for monitoring level of water.

Benefits of the Project

In order to face the upcoming crisis on the poultry farming
sector and meet the required demands, it is imperative to
develop a well-controlled and robust structured automated
poultry farming system that will provide a vital contribution
in the economy of a country. The project is 
automated poultry farm with its unique features such as –
food and water supply, temperature and humidity control
and a poultry waste cleaning system. This system provides
overall protection of the farm and minimizes the effects of
environmental fluctuations. It ensures the health of the
poultry in good condition; the physiological parameters like
temperature, humidity, moisture, light intensity in the farm
are well monitored and controlled with the least human
intervention. Thus, this automated system can be very useful
for farmers as they can easily access and control the system.
these certain features which are integrated into a single automated system will provide more reliability to the poultry farmers who are currently following the traditionally manual and inefficient procedures. This device can even be modified and designed with advanced technologies. And green energy
conceptualizations, such as - A full standstill system which
will use its own renewable energy resources like rooftop
solar panels or biomass produced from the manure of the
poultry. As we can assume the upcoming crisis in the
poultry farming sector, the required challenges and demands
cannot be fulfilled by the inefficient manual system. In the
field of a poultry farm, these challenges are expected to be
successfully managed, which will ultimately make a
significant contribution to the economy of a country.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • A. Arduino Uno

Arduino Uno is a microcontroller. It is used to control the
sensors and related electrical equipments that are considered
for automation of related factors. In proposed project Arduino
Uno plays most important role in automation to poultry farm.
It requires 5V power supply. Arduino Uno is used because it is
in low cost, easy to use and programming language is simple.

  • B. Sensor modules :

1) DHT 11: DHT 11 is Temperature and Humidity Sensor.
This sensor is used to measure the temperature and humidity
level in poultry farm.
2) MQ 135: MQ 135 is an air quality sensor. It is used to
detect ammonia level in a poultry farm.
3) IR Sensor: Infrared sensor measures the heat of an
object as well as detects the motion. It is used for feeding
system which is placed on top of the poultry feeder. It detects
whether the feed is present in the feeder or not. If IR detects
feeder as empty then specified action is performed and feeder
is filled again.
4) Ultrasonic Sensor: Ultrasonic sensor HC-SR04 is used
in the water supply system to check the water level in a water
tank in a poultry farm. It is used for the measure distance in
between sensor and object in front of the sensor.
5) LDR Sensor: Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) is used
when there is a need to sense the absence and presence of the
light. It is used in light system in poultry farm only during
critical conditions like darkness in the rainy season, etc. LDR
detects darkness present in farm and sends the analog signal to
Arduino.

  • C. RTC DS 3231:

A real-time clock (RTC) is a computer clock, it keeps track
of the current time. RTC DS 3231 is used for following
systems in which required work is done from time to time.
1) In Light Model: In existing system the lights are
controlled manually. In proposed system, RTC module is used
to automatically switch On/Off the lights in poultry farm.
2) In Cleanliness Model: A model for cleaning the chicken
manure is designed. By using the RTC module, through the conveyor belt to discard the waste OR can stored and used as a fertiliser and as an energy source through biogas.

  • D. Relays:

All the sensors which are used are 5V sensors and the
electrical components are of high voltage. Therefore here relay
circuit is used which is capable of handling and switching high
voltage circuits.

  • E. LCD:

The 16 x 2 LCD display is used to display the current
status of considered parameters. It is used mainly for testing
purpose.
