Project Title

SMART PORTABLE GLOVE GESTURE VOCALIZER FOR DEAF AND DUMB

Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject Summary

Gestures are communicative, meaningful body motions such as  physical movements of the fingers, hands, arms, face or body with the objective to convey information or interact with the environment. This project presents a novel system prototype that is able to automatically recognize gestures and converts into various signals like voice, text, etc. Basically an Artificial Network is the concept of our prototype. Some sensors are placed on the hand of deaf people which converts the parameter like finger bend hand position angle into electrical signal  This technology requires less space, which are easily portable, reliable and user friendly. . Hence in our project we connect flex sensors to the glove wore by the people when these flex sensors are bended along with the length the resistance changes and hence it hits the memory where the voice message recorded by us is stored and the message is conveyed through speaker. By using this project we can reduce the difficulties faced by the deaf, dumb and physically paralyzed people.

Project Objectives

To implement a system which make a communication gap between deaf peoples and hearing people as less as possible. Deaf people make use of sign language or gestures to make understand what he/she trying to say but it is impossible to understand by hearing people. So, that we come on conclusion to make a simple prototype by taking some of those gesture and convert it into audio and visual form so that they can understand by everyone. For that we are making use of Arduino UNO Board. Basically an Artificial Neural Network is the concept of our prototype. Some sensors are placed on the hand of deaf people which converts the parameter like finger bend hand position angle into electrical signal.

To describes the design and working of a system which is useful for dumb, deaf and blind people to communicate with one another and with the normal people. The dumb people use their standard sign language which is not easily understandable by common people and blind people cannot see their gestures. This system converts the sign language into voice which is easily understandable by blind and normal people. The sign language is translated into some text form, to facilitate the deaf people as well.

Project Implementation Method

It consists of five flex sensors placed on the five fingers which serve the purpose of measuring the bend of fingers during any particular gesture. Flex sensor is a resistive sensor which changes its resistance as per the change in bend or curvature of it into analog voltage. These sensors are able to detect the only the activity of the fingers. The output from the flex sensors is given to the ADC channels of the Arduino UNO. The processed ADC values from the Ardiino UNO  are compared with the threshold values for the recognition of a particular gesture. The particular gesture is recognized and the Arduino UNO gives corresponding commands to the LCD and the Voice Module.  A bluetooth is also present in the hardware section. The Bluetooth module transmits the received data through a wireless channel which is then received by a Bluetooth receiver which is connected to the circuitary of text to speech converter.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

 FLEX SENSOR 2.2
Flex sensor is a variable resistor like no other. The resistance of the flex sensor increases as the body of the component bends. A simple flex sensor 2.2" in length. As the sensor is flexed, the resistance across the sensor increases. Signed letters are determined using flex sensor on each finger. The flex sensors change their resistance based on the
amount of bend in the sensor. As a variable printed resistor, the flex sensor achieves great form-factor on a thin flexible substrate. When sensor placed in gloves is bent,
