Project Summary

For a prolonged duration of time, patients tend to forget to take their medicine on time, or they easily taking wrong medicine on same time. To overcome this problem, an idea was proposed of a smart pill dispenser that will contain seven compartments according to the seven days of a week. Each compartment will be divided into three sub compartments for morning, day and night. The smart pill dispenser will continuously monitor the dosage and will have an alarm system integrated with a smartphone app which will be accessible to the family member and the healthcare provider as well. In addition, if the patient does not take the prescribed medicine on time then an alarm will be generated by the dispenser and an automated message will be generated to the family members and to the healthcare provider. Furthermore, the smart pill dispenser will also be able to generate message for the change of medicine as prescribe by the doctor.  We aim to develop a Smart Healthcare Solution that will monitor the patients who have contagious diseases or the diseases such as Alzheimer’s etc, by collecting their vital signs and also monitor the drug dosage of the patient and sending over the information to a mobile application to be assessed by the doctor. 

Project Objectives

Monitoring of a person is mandatory when the person is sick or diagnosed with a disease, but sometimes it becomes difficult to do so because some diseases are contagious and can spread easily. The inevitable risk borne by medical workers in the process of caring for patients with contagious diseases has been historically most apparent in epidemics. COVID-19 has been the most recent example of this. As hard it is for the patients to be monitored by their doctor, it is equally important too. Without proper monitoring, the patient can suffer in serious illness without proper diagnoses. Emergency situations can be missed too. This can also be the case with elderly people or patients with illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. They also need constant monitoring. Medication also plays a vital role in the healthcare of a patient. While medication has the ability to release pain and relax a chaotic mind, it comes with a big deal of responsibility. Taking the right medication at the right time is hard on its own, and adding in factors like multiple pill bottles, missed doses, and sorting a pill box according to the right schedule can all contribute to medication errors that could, result in some unpleasant effects, and at the worst, hospitalization. Certain vital signs are also affected because of the improper medication schedule. We are proposing a solution to this problem. Bringing in an Automatic Pill Dispenser with the additional features of monitoring a patients vital signs such as SpO2, Temperature, Respiratory Rate and Heart Rate. The effect of pill taking schedule will be monitored according to the vital signs of the patient. The data of the vital signs and the patient’s drug delivery will be transmitted to an app that will be accessible by the doctor and the attendant. This Home-Based solution will provide us the ability to monitor the patient while also keeping a check on the drugs of the patient.

Project Implementation Method

SmartPill framework is formed by 2 subsystems:

Smartpill Dispenser: Physical gadget that will put together, store and apportion the pills. It will go about as the fundamental connection point for the patient.
Smartpill Web App: Web UI that will permit the specialist or capable individual for the patient to design and track patient admissions.
With the assistance of the web application with a decent well disposed UI, the specialist can arrange up to 4 distinct pills for each Smartpill Dispenser and will choose up to 3 admissions each day for every pill. This permits the specialist to change the dose remotely at whatever point is required without the intercession of the actual patient.

SmartPill framework has been planned considering the challenges that a patient with feeble dementia, Alzheimer or visual or discernible weaknesses can have. Thus, the allocator has a huge arrangement screen that will permit the patient to fill the pills in an agreeable manner as well as a discernible and light criticism that will remind the patient to take the pills right with impeccable timing.

The client doesn't need to stress over where or how the various pills must be put. That is on the grounds that there is a brilliant instrument which disseminates the pills inside the pill gadget and apportions the important portion with perfect timing.

SmartPill Dispenser has a remote Internet association with the AWS Cloud on account of the WiFi association of the Microchip AVR-IoT board, so that can be remotely checked and arranged through the web application.

The application will likewise show when the pills have been taken and will inform the relative in the event that the pill isn't taken.

Benefits of the Project

One of the main reasons senior citizens are placed in nursing home facilities is due to the mismanagement of taking prescribed medications. Taking medications incorrectly is also a reason why many seniors are in need of hospitalization. Once you begin your daily regimen, it’s easy to become distracted by everything around you. These distractions are dangerous if you forget which pills you have taken and which you haven’t. They can also result in you missing a dose. If you take many medications at different times each day, it’s a big task to look at the labels to decide which ones are necessary now. As important it is to monitor the drug dosage of a person, it is also equally important that we monitor the vital signs that correctly predict the health condition of the patient. Why do we check patient vital signs? Vital signs give you a baseline when a patient is healthy to compare to the patient’s condition when they aren’t healthy. Abnormalities in vitals can also be a clue to illness or disease that can be hurting the organ systems in the patient’s body. Sometimes, the monitoring the vital signs that are affected by the improper medication schedule can also provide the key information to the doctor that can diagnose a problem. Solving this issue, we bring a device that will solve both of these problems. A device that will have an automatic pill dispenser that will ensure proper medication dosage in addition to monitoring the vital signs such as Temperature, SpO2, Heart Rate and Respiratory Rate and send the information to the doctor or healthcare attendant through an app. This device will target the patients who are infected with contagious diseases as well as elderly patients who are diagnosed with diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s etc. The inclusion criteria of the device can be as follows:

  • Elderly patients
  • Patients diagnosed with diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease.
  • Patients diagnosed with contagious diseases such as COVID-19, TB etc. who are unable to visit the doctor.
  • Children who require proper medication but have working parents.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

There will be two devices, a vital sign monitoring device that will monitor the vital signs of the patient and a pill dispenser, that will dispense the pills according to the timings set by the caregiver.
