Smart load management, Smart metering and detection of Unbalanced Phase fault
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThe older methods for the distribution of electricity and management of loads and metering the overall status was quite difficult along with the balancing of phase faults due to the old conventional method. It was a method that required a lot of human effort to manage the system. In other countries or we can say in the developed countries the technique of digitalization is used for years for now and our project is the idea of converting the conventional distribution system into a completely digital machine-controlled distribution system. Our project is based on the automation of the substation, where the load is managed smartly with the real-time monitoring that can be called smart metering. The detection of faults in this way becomes much easier due to the completely digital process. In our case, we are using a Remote Terminal Unit (R.T.U) that is the main controller or main unit or base of the project. The state indication with time synchronization is managed by the HMI (Human Machine Interface) where the overall system statistics are displayed to keep track of the system. Intelligent electronic devices (IED's) are also used within our project to manage data and load. It is a real-time distributed control and monitoring system that can be accessed from any location or wide ranges. This project takes the form of a prototype that will be implemented subsequently.
Project ObjectivesOur main objective of developing this project is to end the old conventional method and to convert the distribution of electricity into a completely digital system which will be much smarter and easier to look after. Understanding the load management system of the field and working on it and determining the unbalance fault and to protect human life from this and to provide electrical power monitoring system successfully and learn and apply the smart metering.
Project Implementation MethodThe Industrial/ Electronic basic application of this project is load management and protection system using IEDs, which is used for load management or load shedding and use for metering. We can detect unbalance fault, so it’s easy to protect human life from this. This project will be implemented by the main electricity distributors that include K-Electric and WAPDA, etc. To make the system more efficient and reliable.
Benefits of the ProjectThe benefits of this project are:
- It introduces the digital way of electricity distribution, load management, smart metering and detection of unbalanced phase faults.
- It helps to overcome the errors and faults in real-time with less human effort.
- It provides complete stats of the project working, allowing the user to track the entire system.
- It will play a vital role in the development of the electricity distribution sector of Pakistan.
- This project can be used in university labs.
Our project Smart load management, Smart metering and detection of Unbalanced Phase fault will be able to control load management, metering and will be able to detect the unbalanced phase faults using the HMI (Human Machine Interface) and can be monitored or controlled using RTU (Remote Terminal Unit). The idea of smart metering and protection will be applied. We will be using IEDs. IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Device) are used in automation of power systems. They are the advanced versions of relays. If any fault or issue occurs, it will be shown in HMI and through RTU it can be monitored and controlled.
