Project Summary

Pakistan has been facing grave power generation and transmission issues for the last couple of decades. Efficiency of existing power systems have degraded over time and culminated into a big problem constituting of line losses, heat and regular failures of the system.

The idea proposed in this FYP is to develop a single phase variable frequency drives (VFD) for inductive loads in Pakistan. A VFD is an electronic device to add speed control to otherwise fixed speed AC motors or pumps which results in increased control and efficiency of such devices. Single phase VFDs are not commonly available in the market and developing such a device would allow conversion of already available single phase inductive consumer and industrial appliances to a speed controlled operation, thereby increasing efficiency.

Project Objectives

To develop a PCB Hardware and Software controller to implement a suitable Single phase variable frequency drive (VFD) which sustains loads up to a few kilo-watts. 

Project Implementation Method

The idea proposed in this FYP is to simulate three separate modules; namely the DC bus generation module, the inverter module and the control module on Altium Designer, afterwhich they are produced on single layer printed circuit boards to work together as a Single Phase Variable Frequency Drive.
 

Benefits of the Project

Single phase variable frequency drives are a viable solution to the problem of increasing energy efficiency of single phase inductive loads and VFDs are able to actually enhance the operation of inductive appliances as well as increase their efficiency by adding capability of operation at partial capacity.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Technical Details include the use of an Inverter module (4 MOSFET H-bridge setup with two outputs), Control module (STM32F103C8T6 chip running at 72MHz clock speed) and the C Language coding required for the control module to operate.
