Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryHuman civilization advance on a very basic principle that “Necessity is the mother of invention”. We moved from the cart’s age to the steam-powered means of transportation and from there to the Fossil fuel-powered means of transportation and now it has become our necessity to switch to more eco-friendly electrical means of transportation. The issues arising with the typical combustion-based vehicles are catastrophic therefore it has brought us to this project. This project deals with a self-powered system based on the continuous recharging of battery banks from harvested energy via regenerative braking and Photovoltaic modules. Moreover coming to the alarming rate of accidents in Pakistan it has become our very need to develop a nationally produced AI-based accident and malfunction avoidance system. Our proposed project introduces us to many major issues with transportation vehicles in Pakistan and encourages its consideration on the national scale.
Project ObjectivesTwo energy harvesting means have been optioned regenerative braking system and Photovoltaic modules the system will continuously charge our battery bank via four-quadrant operation of our driving unit which will be working under its simultaneous motor-generator action. In accident avoidance system subtle obstacle occurrence shall be detected via ultrasonic sensors in such a way its relative speed is measured therefore the system will adjust speed accordingly or break completely if necessary. Furthermore, our vehicle shall be enabled to detect any brake failure or other sorts of malfunction. Whereas the presence of intoxicated drivers under alcohol influence has also been added as drunk driving incidents are not just an issue abroad but its tolls in Pakistan are also concerning. With this project we aim to expand our horizons in every electrical engineering major, we look to introduce ourselves to the more smart approach to vehicles since experts believe the upcoming future is all around electric means of transportation.
Project Implementation MethodThe implementation phase involves putting the project plan into action. It’s here that the team will coordinate and direct project resources to meet the objectives of the project plan. The implementation of this project takes place under a prototype presentation. The embedded systems part of this project can be done using pic 18f series controllers. For accident detection and avoidance we usually can use Ultrasonic proximity sensors to design modules to detect the nature of the accident and to control speed accordingly, breaking of the system would be included under a four-quadrant operation system.Which also includes the simultaneous motor-generator action of the driving unit. In order to cover the photovoltaic based generation of energy, we will develop a PV module with complete charge controllers.
Benefits of the ProjectWith this particular project, our team aims to bring the necessity of more eco-friendly electrical vehicles into consideration. Our environment observes almost 4.6 metric tons of carbon emission from a single typical vehicle per annually; we aim to develop zero-emission vehicles more reliable on renewable energy sources. Typical combustion-based vehicles consume 146.8 million gallons of fuel per year in Pakistan, imagine this huge amount of fossil fuel to supply to the industrial sector with lower prices than to the consumer vehicles, those vehicles can instead operate on more regenerative sources of energy. This act will not just take off the burden over fuel dependency of our country but will also help our countries GDP to incredible lengths. According to the ‘WHO’, traffic accidents in Pakistan reached a record height of 36,081 which is an alarming situation in the country. It has become most important need to design more AI-based vehicles that can detect the possible collision and the nature of collision as well and take decisions accordingly to prevent any misfortunate event also other sorts of mishaps like the presence of the drunk driver, brake failure or other sorts of malfunction needs to be brought under consideration as well.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final product will be a complete system installed in a prototype car that consists of the sensor network along energy harvesting system. The final deliverable will be.
- Sensors detecting drunk or unconscious driver, obstacle detection, break faliure detector while making decision accordingly.
- Making the whole system self-powered by extracting energy from different available sources while continuously storing it in the battery to which will in turn run the whole system.
