In control applications, there are certain constraints in power consumption and size of the device. In this project, we made a device along with its control unit. The power consumption of the device is optimized by selecting a suitable controller and programming techniques. The device operates on a cell for any time between 1 min to 500 hours and then activates the actuator, which then performs the required task.
The device also keeps on checking the external change on a certain pin which can be used to perform some other required task.
Through the control unit, operating time for the device is selected or the status of the cell that will run the device is checked. Further, the information received from the device can be senddisplayed on LCD or other devices.
Communication between the control unit and the device is done through a single wire protocol.
To make a device and its control unit that can be used in several control applications.
Features of the device are:
1- Device size no more than 2.5 inches(diameter).
2- Current consumption less than 0.3 mA
3- Device will operate only on a Coin cell (12x13 mm).
4- Device can keep sensing external input for 500 hours.
5- If external input is sensed, it will activate the actuator.
6- After 500 hours it will activate the actuator.
Features of the control unit:
1- Device actuator time is set through the control unit.
2- Battery status is checked through the control unit.
3- Can senddisplay device information.
4- Communicates with the device through a single wire protocol.
PIC microcontrollers are used to make both, control unit and device. The control unit consists of the PIC18F4520 controller along with 16x2 LCD and some push buttons to specify a time for the device. Whereas the device unit consists of the PIC14F688 controller and a cell(255 mAH) to run it. communication between the two controllers is done through a single wire protocol system. To minimize power consumption, the device operates in sleep mode and performs the defined objectives.
This project can be used in security systems for homes, offices, shops, etc. can also be used in defense systems where it is required to blast bombs after a certain period of time. The device is easy to make as PIC controllers are available almost everywhere.
objectives are user-defined as any time can be set for defined objective or any task can be achieved if an external interrupt occurs.
Device(PIC16F688):
- 14-pin IC with
- 8 MHz internal oscillator block.
- Operating voltage range: 2.0V to 5.5V.
- Stand by current: 50nA at 2.0V.
- Operating current: 220uA at 4MHz,2.0V.
Control Unit(PIC18F4520):
- 40-pin IC
- 8 MHz internal oscillator block.
External EEPROM(ds2431):
- Switchpoint Hysteresis and Filtering to Optimize Performance in the Presence of Noise
- Reads and Writes Over a Wide Voltage Range from 2.8V to 5.25V from -40°C to +85°C
- Communicates to Host with a Single Digital Signal at 15.4kbps or 125kbps Using 1-Wire Protocol.
