Power Generation Through Road Using Dual Rack and Pinion System
Energy plays a vital role in our lives. From combing hairs to brushing teeth energy is everywhere. In our surroundings, energy exists in several different forms. Energy can be converted from one form to other depending on the nature of forms. In this hustle and bustle, population increases enormously and the existed energy sources are going to be vanished at a great rate. This extra usage of energy sources has led to a major energy crisis in coming years. In the present condition, we need to solve this problem by conservation of energy. Aggravating number of vehicles on the roads are hindered by speed breakers to slow them down. In this paper, power generation using speed breaker is presented. The vehicles put a pressure on the speed breaker and using rack and pinion mechanism, the kinetic energy is converted to mechanical energy. An electric circuit converts this mechanical energy into electrical energy and we can store energy in battery. This electrical energy is then used to turn on the street lights. With high efficiency, this method is suitable for energy harvesting. Later battery supplies the stored electrical energy. Energy generation by speed breakers is a unique concept as it converts the wasted energy into useful part of electrical energy.
Pakistan is an underdeveloped country; facing many crises. The basic problem is exponential increase in population. The population of Pakistan in recent census came out to be 207,774,520. Now-a-days the demand of electricity is increased to a surplus level, this increased demand has become a cause of reduction of useful energy resources. The consumption and availability of resources increases and decreases respectively. Economy of every country depends entirely upon is energy resources. Energy crisis is caused by two things the most, first, the rapid increase in world population; secondly, living standards of people. The requirement of energy will increase 2.3% from 2015 to onward 2040. According to Energy Information Administration USA, a total of 60% increase in demand occurred in the three decades. The available resources are fossil fuels, gas, oil and renewable resources are the main sources for power generation, but there is a chance of extinction of these resources in coming decades. Hence, Renewable energy methods will play an important role in future from renewable sources to fulfill our demands. In Pakistan, the demand of energy increases in summer period. For this lessen demand, the mechanism presented in this paper is a suitable method to generate energy and to overcome energy crises in Pakistan.
Mechanical energy can be stored in batteries by using an appropriate electric circuit. Motion of vehicles involves different energies for example kinetic energy, heat energy and mechanical energy. Main thing which is involved in this method is the weight of the car. Weight of the car pushes the rack down and gears to move, so the circuit join with it rotates and convert the surplus energy into useful energyThree types of energies involved in this conversion in order to generate required electricity. Figure 3 shows complete process of conversion.
4.1 Kinetic Energy
Kinetic energy is the most common energy. K.E is the energy possessed by a body due to its motion.
It is related to speed of the object and mass of the body. It is a scalar quantity.
4.2 Mechanical Energy
Energy associated due to the motion and position of a body. Mechanical energy is attained when the body is in motion.
4.3 Electrical Energy
Energy possessed by charged particles (electrons) when move from one part to another. Electrons moves in fixed surrounding fields called electric shells. The movement of these charged particles will generate electrical power.
This project presents a state of the art mechanism for extraction of mechanical energy and converting it to electrical energy. Following points make this study an advantageous effort:

It can be fitted at any place on the road.
Cost effective
Rack and pinion
It consists of a pair of gears which converts wheel movement into useful output power. Figure 4 shows rack and pinion mechanism. It uses teeth for the movement of wheel.
Gear System
Gear System is used with rack and pinion mechanism to move the respected motors and causes energy to produce. Figure 5 shows gear system.
Chain drive and set
It consists of a wheel which is connected by chain. Chain is used to drive the mechanical power coming out of motors. Chain Drive set is shown in figure
