Project Summary

The world around us is transforming rapidly, changing the way people and goods travel within and across cities, regions and countries. By 2030, annual passenger traffic will exceed 80 trillion passenger-kilometers—a fifty percent increase; global freight volumes will grow by 70 percent and an additional 1.2 billion cars will be on the road by 2050—double today’s total. With a growing aspiration for mobility and the strong association between transport and economic growth getting the pattern of mobility “right” has become a defining factor of the future. This immense increase in mobility also has its effect on the global environmental impact. Transport is the third-largest source of  CO2 emissions after the power sector and other industrial combustions. 

In Pakistan, the transport sector has been growing with double-digit growth. If this growth continues, the expense will also be doubled to support the transport sector, which will also have its consequences on our economy and climate change in Pakistan. The Global Climate Risk Index has placed Pakistan as the fifth most vulnerable country to climate change in its annual report for 2020. The transport sector is the main contributor to this increasing pollution.

The transport sector of Pakistan needs to be transformed towards more sustainability. In today’s rapidly changing world, electric vehicles are emerging as a solution to the road of sustainable transportation

Pakistan government has introduced EV policy for the country where it aims to convert 30% of fossil-fuel-based vehicles into EV

The design and fabrication of electric cars and developing charging infrastructure is going to take some time to implement this policy on a large scale. Meanwhile, E-bikes could provide us with a way forward towards the motorization of Pakistan’s transport sector. E-bike is a type of EV based on a traditional bicycle to which an electric motor has been added to help propel it. On an e-bike, we could travel a distance of 25-30km per charge easily.  It is an ecological and urban means of transport and its source of energy is a battery that could also be charged with the help of a solar panel. In Pakistan, E-bikes could play a more important role because they are an economical and simple option for urban transport problems and has environmental advantages

In Pakistan, it could be present as the solution to our many problems such as traffic congestion, air pollution, high rates of fuels and dependence on the car.

This research is going to highlight the potential analysis and implementation of E-bikes in Pakistan. E-bikes will provide as a goal setter for our country, to make more developments in the EV sector.

Project Objectives

This research aims to investigate the potential of e-bikes in terms of providing more technologically engaged and sustainable transportation in Pakistan. The objectives of this research are as follows:

  • To investigate the potential of e-bike as means of transport in the developing countries while comparing with the fossil fuel-based system.
  • To design and develop an e-bike prototype and analyze its performance. 
  • To provide policy recommendations for Pakistan's transport sector for the adoption of e-bikes. 

Project Implementation Method

PROJECT RESEARCH:

Project specifications of the project as such selection of the specific type of bicycle, weightage of the bicycle, the motor requirement for the specific bicycle design, controller and battery required according to the design specification.

PROTOTYPE:

The prototype development of the project will be done on the existing design of the bicycle by making modifications with the help of motor and battery to convert it into the e-bike. Whereas there would be some limitations in the face of the weightage of bicycles because the bicycle used is not specifically designed for this aim. if we use lightweight aluminum bicycle this problem could be solved. 

EVALUATION:

The performance and safety of the project will be compared to the specifically designed e-bike for this purpose. The challenges in implementing e-bike in Pakistan will also be analyzed accordingly. 

Benefits of the Project

Life Made Easier: The implementation of this project could result in the deployment of e-bike on a small scale in developing countries. .It could be used in our daily life routine because most of our rides comprise of short distances and on an e-bike, we could travel a 25-30km journey per charge. 

Convenient and accessible: Making an e-bike does not require such expertise these could be made easier if a person has basic electrical and mechanical information in terms it could be an affordable easy means of transportation in a city for people who could not afford expensive means of transport.

Innovation And Tourism: This project can be implemented as a start-up in regions where tourism is at its peak in Pakistan. Foreign tourists could rent these e-bikes for their trips across the city or a company could be launched which could provide rides to tourists using an e-bike.

Green Environment: This all is going to result in less dependence on cars which will have directly its impact on climate change. 

Industry and Manufacturation: The condition of public transport is very bad in our country hence this could be an affordable and easier form of transport if we start manufacturing e-bikes in our country for people who could not afford more expensive means of transport.

Better Health: The usage of e-bike could also increase your physical activity and not even cause exhaustion in case if you choose to alternate between pedaling and motorization. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our project's final deliverable is going to be an e-bike which would consist of 36v 500watts dc motor, the battery for operating this specific motor, controller for the safe operation of e-bike and throttle to control the speed of e-bike through the controller. Ebike's usage would pose a less threat to our changing climate. The analysis of performance parameters is going to give a clear view of what betterment is required and could be brought more in the design.
