Project Title

OPTIMAL DRIVE OF AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE USING VFD

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

In this project We are making the Electric Vehicle That will operate on Variable Frequency Drive. The reason to choose VFD as our prime controller because VFD is a power electronics-based device which converts a basic fixed frequency, fixed voltage sine wave power to a variable frequency, variable output voltage used to control speed of induction motors. It regulates the speed of a three-phase induction motor by controlling the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to the motor. We will use VFD as a controller for our electric vehicle which will control the speed of induction motor. We are using Lithium ion Batteries that will give power to inverter that will convert DC to Three phase Ac and give power to VFD and this will control the speed of induction motor. The benefit of using VFD is it can save energy reduce inrush current speed can be change according to user demand. Electric Vehicle are become very important in world they do not have   CO2 emissions. They have high safety features.

Project Objectives

The main objectives of the project are:
1. Optimal drive of an electrical vehicle using VFD.
2. Designing of a VFD for the optimal drive of a Electrical Vehicle.
3. Control of an Electrical Vehicle using VFD.
4. Implement Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique for VFD to obtain Sin wave.
5. Reduce Energy consumption from battery.
6. Increase the efficiency of electric vehicle to give good range.
7. Vehicle for a common man at cheap cost.
8. Vehicle which is cheaper to maintain.

Project Implementation Method

To implement this project, it is divided into following parts:
1- Size of Electric Vehicle and its weight
2- Calculations for the size of Induction motor
3- Calculations for the size of batteries
4- Designing of Variable frequency Drive
5- Code of Pulse width modulation technique to implement in VFD.
6- PCB design for VFD.
7- Structure of Electric Vehicle
8- Fitting of VFD and induction Motor in Structure of EV.
9- Testing of Electric Vehicle

Benefits of the Project
  1. The project contributes itself towards government new policies in Pakistan for Increase in electric vehicle. The electric vehicle will provide positive contribution towards the environment by making itself pollution free.
  2. The electric vehicle will allow its user to have benefits like cheaper to run and spend minimum cost at maintenance.
  3. The world is struggling hard to save oil, gas  and  to make it pollution free for which many NGOs are struggling hard and at the same time electrical vehicle will allow people to sustain in better environment by saving energy and making environment pollution free.
  4. The use of VFD in making this vehicle will add more benefits to the project by reducing inrush current and reduction in KVA. This overall improves the efficiency of the motor and hence the higher efficiency of the motor can be obtained.
  5. Health Benefits Reduced harmful exhaust emissions is good news for our health. Better air quality will lead to less health problems and costs caused by air pollution. EVs are also quieter than petrol/diesel vehicles, which means less noise pollution.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable of the project includes:

  1. Designing Variable frequency Drive
  2. Implementing pulse width modulation in VFD
  3. Driving the electric vehicle with VFD
  4. Designing of electric vehicle whose efficiency will increase by using VFD
