Navigational Assistive Shoes
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryAccording to WHO, about 15% of the world's population lives with some form of disability. Globally the number of people of all ages visually impaired is estimated to be 285 million, of whom 39 million are blind. People 50 years and older are 82% of all blind. Blindness is one of the most, if not the most, misunderstood type of disability. Most of the members of the non-blind community believe that the blind people cannot do their work or live a normal life. Many blind people require travel aids to navigate in unknown environments. We present Smart Assistive Shoes project that enable the visually impaired users with mobility impairment to avoid obstacles. By leveraging existing robotics technologies, our system detects obstacles such as curbs, and staircases in the ground or even moving objects, and transmits obstacle information through haptic feedback (vibrations and beeps) . It also includes GPS tracking system that will help his/her family so that they can locate the blind person at anywhere , anytime. As it also includes the connected headphones that makes instructions and for those who are blind and deaf too, we have added a vibrating system that will vibrate if the system detects any hurdle or obstacle. We’ve also added temperature sensor and water sensor that makes an alert when it detects water or heat(Fire). His family can also define route that make total instructions so that the blind person can go himself to his destination. Initial experiments show that our device enables human users to navigate safely in indoor and outdoor environments.
Project Objectives- In Smart Shoes, we tried to give a hand to help those people. We have designed a small, wearable and a shoes system that allows the user to move in a right direction and to avoid hitting the hurdles while walking.
- Includes temperature sensor and water sensor that makes an alert when it detects water or heat(Fire).
- Include headphones connected to the shoes which play the sounds to move in a proper direction or to stop if it detects a hurdle.
- Includes GPS tracking system that allows the guardians of the individual to track him anywhere and also let them define a route for the blind person to go to his destination himself.
First of all we have to program the MCU component . we have to configure the ultrasonic sensor and vibrating motor in such a way that if the ultrasonic sensor detects any hurdle with in a specific range , the vibrating motor will beep and vibrate . Headphones will be connected via Bluetooth module . A temperature sensor and water sensor that makes an alert when it detects water or heat(Fire). A GPS tracker will be connected to the device so that it can perform its functions. An LED will be attached to the MCU board which will make a display to identify if the device is turned on or off. We will design a ,mobile app which will monitor the system and can be used to turn on or off the device or to define a route. We will implement the database in such a way that it can store the record of location history of the individual.
Benefits of the ProjectSight is considered the most important sense and the blind people are observed upon with pity by others. Technology helps the blind people to communicate with the environment, the communication process and the dissemination of information has become very fast and on a wider scale to include all parts of the world which greatly affected to the human life, thus increasing the ways of entertainment and comfort and reduced suffering and hardship in many things. Blind people are part of this world, so the technology must leave a significant impact on their lives to make what was impossible for them as possible and available to them today. The assistance provided earlier for blind people were as a particular hardware devices such as talking OCR Products, identifying color, barcode readers; that hardware were expensive and limited capabilities due to rapid change in hardware. The challenges faced by impaired/blind people in their daily lives are not well understood. In this paper, we try to present an application called SMART SHOES where is it’s a way to give hand to blind people with the aid of technology in order to solve some of their faced problems. The Application results enhance the understanding of the problems facing blind people daily, and may help encourage more projects targeted to help blind people to live independent in their daily lives.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableFinal deliverable will contain following :-
- Smart Shoes that will be controlled via mobile app and will help identify the right direction through GPS and the blind person can move towards his destination himself via the GPS system. It also makes an alert when it detect any hurdle.
- Headphones that are connected with the shoes which will play the sounds that will make instructions
- Mobile Application that will be synced with shoes and headphones, that can be used to turn on/off the device (shoes) and also share the location of the blind person with his family.
Includes temperature sensor and water sensor that makes an alert when it detects water or heat(Fire).
