In the era of fast going technology we are intimately entangled with digital technology and using this technology we are trying to overcome the critical problem of underground minerals ,as we know that human beings are facing problems in daily life our system would be capable to overcome the current problem of underground mines. Be aware of through observation Pakistan is the richest country in the form of different kind of expensive minerals which we found in distinct places in KP and all over Pakistan but unfortunately in Pakistan our government don’t have any proper safety system for that expensive mines, according to an article of Aljazeera news in 2018 there was at least 18 miners have been killed in Baluchistan region due to methane gas explosion and unavailability of ventilation system. The proposed system will helping out and provide solution to design a safety system for coal mines which will helpful for the miners, the particular problem could be solve through some computer programming techniques  where the system can use internet of things and some other parameters to solve the problem, the system will provide automatic ventilation system and detect the hazardous gases inside the mines by finding the hazardous gases the system would be taking decision on the given inputted data, and system will automatically turn on the exhaust fan to ventilate the hazardous gases and on the same time siren will turn on the emergency tone, the system can also send data to android phone and finding out the regular graph of the data.

Project Objectives

In the current implemented system of underground mines there is a lot of issues and critical problems, but the technology is going fast, and researchers find out the solution very soon for such kind of problems, so one of the most important and economical issue which miners facing now a days. There is no proper safety system for underground coal mines in Pakistan, and gradually increase the mines accidents inside the mines sometimes it is happening due to explosion of dangerous gases and usually there is no proper ventilation system so that is why the probability of accidents is gradually increasing.

Our system will provide the optimize solution for the current problem of miners and proposed a safety system which will be helpful to recognize the hazardous situation of mines, and monitor all air quality and environment of minerals , it will be notifying the working labors though siren emergency tune and informing the centralized office using smart phone. The concentration of dangerous gasses is much higher, the most common gasses are (Methane, Carbon monoxide, Carbon dioxide etc).

Project Implementation Method

We are integrating a safety system for underground mines and its environment monitoring. This system will help those who are working inside mines (miners), as we know that there are many hazardous gasses inside mines area so our system will detect the hazardous gasses (CO2,CO,CH4 … etc.) and will notify mines labors through siren and also send notification to main control room system.

The system includes of four interconnected modules installed at different sites of mines. Each module includes group of sensors sensing different hazardous gasses. Those sensors will sense hazardous gasses and if the values cross the general threshold then the system activates the siren and also the ventilation system. The sensed data is also sent to cloud for predictions. Through machine learning the sensed data is monitored and by applying different algorithms it would be able predict accordingly.

Benefits of the Project

Hundreds of miners (mines’ works) have lost their precious lives in mines due to explosions and hazardous gases in mines and the process hasn’t stopped yet. We came up with the idea to upgrade these mines. This project aims to introduce the modern technology (Internet of Things) to mines of Pakistan.

This project will benefit the mines’ workers in insuring their health and will also help the mines owners to improve the growth of mines as the environment of the mines will be controlled.

Mines usually contain different hazardous and malicious gasses which affect mines health and cause them many inhalation related diseases. This project will show the values of hazardous gasses so if the environment of a mine at a specific time is not according to the healthy environment then the administration can simply stop the miners from working to avoid problems.

Some gasses inside mines aren’t just dangerous for health but are explosive and may cause explosion which can take many lives at a moment. This project will avoid such dangerous cases and will generate alarm so that miners can leave on time.

The system will also control the ventilation system, so when the gases level is high it will activate the ventilation system to ventilate the mine.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable will contain NodeMCU, NRF, Exhause fans, Siren and five sensors to sense different hazardous gasses. Those sensors are MQ2, MQ5, MQ7, MG811 and DHT11.

The module NodeMCU is used as controller and will receive the sensed values from the sensors and decides when to activate the alarm and ventilation system. This module also uploads data to firebase with help of NRF module.


MQ2 sensor sense the methane gasses and forward the values to the controller.

MQ5 sensor detects the liquefied petroleum gas and forward it to the controller.

MQ7 sensor sense the carbon monoxide gas inside mine and upload data to controller.

MG811 gas sensor detects the carbon dioxide gas inside mine and send it to the controller.

DHT11 sensor sense the humidity and temperature of mine and forward it to the controller.

Fan or Exhaust will help in ventilation of the mines while the buzzer act as siren to alert the workers of mines.
