Project Title

Design and modelling of Inlet and exhaust systems of a reciprocating internal combustion engine

Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject Summary

The project pertains to the mathematical modeling of intake and exhaust flows in a reciprocating IC engine and envisages parameterization of the single-phase fluid flows in a diesel engine. Such a study will involve piston head design and the static and dynamic design and calculations of different components of these systems. The project may experience extension to a comparative study of Opposed 2 stroke vs. conventional 4 stroke Intake and exhaust systems.

Project Objectives

As newer forms of renewable energy seem to have emerged, electric vehicles are becoming common. Yet, due to a few issues such as range, sustainability, and long life, Internal combustion engines have not lost their place. We are trying to study the transient flows of the fuel-air mixture during intake and exhaust to better understand the ongoing research in the field and put in effort towards the active goal of a cleaner and environmentally friendly IC engines.

Project Implementation Method

We will use the study of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, mechanics, and design for the implementation.

  1. Phase 1: Strong literature as a piece of evidence that the work is worth doing
  2. Phase 2: CFD analysis of flows of Air-fuel mixture during and exhaust of the selected marine engine
  3. Phase 3: Dynamic analysis of mechanism involved for controlling intake and exhaust.
  4. Phase 4: Design of piton head for particular stresses and pressures
  5. Phase 5: finalization and implementation as a practical model
Benefits of the Project
  1. A base step to study and research further on better ways to combust fuel
  2. Restore humanity's belief in the Internal combustion engine and stop portraying the marvel of engineering as a villain.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable of the project will be a comprehensive study of intake and exhaust flows that will further help us to extend the research towards newer technologies such as HCCI, RCCI, and opposed-piston engines for energy production.
