IOT Streetlight Controller System
Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject SummaryHere we propose an IOT based street light monitoring and controlling system to ensure, low power consumption, consumption monitoring, instant faulty light detection and light dimming as per external lighting conditions. Our proposed system consists of smart street lights that have external light sensing that automatically turns on at desired intensity based on amount of lighting needed. The system also allows the controller/monitoring person to check estimate power consumptions as per current intensity of light as well as predict monthly power consumption. Also each of the unit has load sensing functionality that allows it to detect if the light has a fault. It then automatically flags that light is faulty and this data is sent over to the IOT monitoring system so that action can be taken to fix it. We here use IOT Gecko iot development platform for the online system using the iot gecko api to transmit data and display online.
Project ObjectivesThe objective of this study is as follows:
The main aim of smart street light systems is that lights turn on when needed and light turn off when not needed. Moreover, the smart street light system in this paper behaves like usual street lights that turn on all night.
- To provide lighting to the streets such that minimum possible power is consumed during nights.
- To manage the traffic flow smoothly and efficiently during night.
- To replace the conventional halogen lamps with the power LEDs in the lighting system
The system works as follows:
This work aims to develop a smart LED lighting system, which is remotely controlled by Android apps via handheld devices, e.g., Smartphone’s, tablets, and so forth. The status of energy use is reflected by readings displayed on a handheld device, and it is treated as a criterion in the lighting mode design of a system. A multimeter, a wireless light dimmer, an IR learning remote module, etc. are connected to a server by means of RS 232/485 and a human computer interface on a touch screen. The wireless data communication is designed to operate in compliance with the Zig Bee standard, and signal processing on sensed data is made through a self adaptive weighted data fusion algorithm. A low variation in data fusion together with a high stability is experimentally demonstrated in this work. The wireless light dimmer as well as the IR learning remote module can be instructed directly by command given on the human computer interface, and the reading on a multimeter can be displayed thereon via the server. This proposed smart LED lighting system can be remotely controlled and self learning mode can be enabled by a single handheld device via WiFi transmission. Hence, this proposal is validated as an approach to power monitoring for home appliances, and is demonstrated as a digital home network in consideration of energy efficiency.
Benefits of the ProjectThe smart street light system using IoT can realize automatic switching on/off without manual operation. The IoT street light controller system can set different working times for different solar-powered led street lights based on actual needs will save cost and power.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableSmart Lighting Terminal Controller is widely used in the Smart City Street Lighting Projects, Express highway Tunnels and the Industrial Lighting System on warehouses, factorries, etc., to control lighting fixtures through the Man-Machine Interface, Lamp Monitoring and Data acquisition.
Our project for developing a smart street light system is reviewed. In this project, the street light system, in which lights on when needed and light-off when not needed. Currently, in the whole world, enormous electric energy is consumed by the street lamps, which are automatically turn on when it becomes dark and automatically turn off when it becomes bright. This is the huge waste of energy in the whole world and should be changed. Our smart street light system consists of a LED light, a brightness sensor, a motion sensor and a short-distance communication network. The lights turn on before pedestrians and vehicles come and turn off or reduce power when there is no one. It will be difficult for pedestrians and drivers of vehicles to distinguish our smart street lamps and the conventional street lights, since our street lamps all turn on before they come. The present status and the future prospects of our smart start light project will be reviewed.
