Project Summary

A biomedical device which maintains by monitoring and controlling different vital stats for newly born babies like Temperature, Humidity and Oxygen levels. Infant incubator is in the form of trolley with a small mattress. Incubators is normally for the preterm and premature babies who born before 37 weeks.  Incubator shell provides clean environment and protects baby from external environmental conditions to let their body matured. In our advanced incubator, three vital signs, heart rate, oxygen and temperature, are continuously and wirelessly monitored.

Project Objectives

The main objectives of the project is to provide an inexpensive incubation system. (Under $1000). The optimum temperature (37 degrees Celsius) of infant body temperature, ventilation with controlled oxygen support, and humidity of the infant shell environment is to be maintained at optimum level. The existing design is improved by adding control of other vital stats like heart beat etc. The measured parameters will be available to the control center of the incubators and also a monitoring web based app will be developed to have check and balance on parameters of incubator wirelessly.

Project Implementation Method

A sensor is basically used to get data of different parameters from incubator shell .Different sensors like thermometer, oximeter and humidity sensors monitoring the body parameters of infant and shell. Sensors output is connected to microcontroller. Optimum values suitable for shell is adjusted with buttons interfaced with Microcontroller. Output of microcontroller is connected to air and temperature closed loop control system and will turn on or off the control systems as per requirement. Wireless based Alarm will blow out if condition exceeds the optimum values because noise is also a harmless factor for the preterm and premature babies .LCD connected with microcontroller to show instantaneous and preset values of parameters. The complete system is fitted in a trolley with infant shell to provide a control environment to an infant. All the parameters like heart rate, oxygen and temperature, are continuously and wirelessly monitored.

Benefits of the Project

In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that in 1 million among 15 million of preemies do not survive due to prematurity, making in turn preterm birth ranked as the second-leading reason for death for children who did not complete their fifth year and the number one fatal syndrome in the first month after birth. Mortality rate, infant (per 1,000 live births) in Pakistan was reported at 64.2 in 2016, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources. This number can be reduced if we manage to build a locally made inexpensive incubator to fulfil our requirements. It helps economy grow as the need of imported incubators reduced to low if this project is launch as a product.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

 A final deliverable of the project consists of an infant incubator. It consists of trolley, mattress and infant shell. A microcontroller with different sensors like thermometer, oximeter and humidity sensors are installed inside the shell. The temperature and air control system with proper ventilation is available in the incubator.  In order to save infant from external environment conditions, a complete sealed environment will be available for an infant.
