EEG (electroencephalography) is a process which is used to image the brain while it is performing a cognitive task. This allows us to detect brain activity during various types of cognitive functions. EEG allows us to view and record the changes in your brain activity during the time you are performing different tasks. Brainwaves are acquired by using electrodes to monitor the amount of electrical activity at different points of the scalp. EEGs are non-invasive and do not involve any X-rays, radiation, or injections. EEGs have been used for many years and are considered very safe. The electrodes record activity without producing any sensation.
This project is used to generate an alarming signal when brain comes in the state of sleep and drowsing. This is a new application of EEG (Electroencephalography) which helps us in detecting driver’s unconscious state of brain. It is electrical activity along the scalp of the brain. Brain generates many signals which help us to know states of brain. The focus will be to record only those signals that provides information of person’s drowsiness/sleep. And through those signal we will know about the status of the person, if he is in the state of drowsiness then the buzzer start alarming, also we will use a vibrator with the buzzer for producing vibration.
The main focus is life safety of driver while driving a car and goes to drowsiness. In order to prevent any mishap/accident due to drowsiness/deep sleep, a prototype is expected to be designed in this project. The EEG Based Drowsiness and sleep detector will alert the driver at the moment his brain goes to drowsiness state and produces the frequency of drowsiness i.e. between 0.5—3Hz as shown in figure below.

EEG Headset is used to obtain the EEG signals from the scalp of the human brain. When the signal is acquired an alarm is generated which will alert the driver when his brain goes to drowsiness state and produces the frequency of drowsiness.
The steps involved in the methodology of the work are as follow;
A driver while driving on a long route has a great probability to get drowsy while driving. The driver life safety is related not only to himself but also to the entire passengers in the car. In Pakistan most of the road accidents are caused due to the drowsiness of driver. This is therefore a major issue to be solved in a manner to design a system with drowsiness detection and automatic alarm to alert the driver.
In Pakistan 10,125 crashes were reported to police including 4193 fatal cases in 2017. According to a study conducted by the Aga Khan University in Karachi, government statistics included only 56% of deaths and 4% of serious injuries and concluded that traffic fatalities are a much more serious health problem than is reported by the official statistics which show a death rate of 11.2 per 100,000.
A number of accidents have been occurring due to the drowsiness state of driver risking his own life and the life of the passengers as well. The advantage of our project is that the life of the driver as well as the passenger can be saved by alerting the driver just before his mind goes into the state of drowsiness.
