Countries like Pakistan where there is a lot of energy crisis; the reason is “consumption more than production”. Now either we produce more or we consume electricity in a disciplinary way. We in our daily routine observe indisciplinary usage of electricity. Let’s take an example of education sectors, we observe inefficient usage, students leave their classrooms without turning off electrical appliances (tube lights, fans, and projector). Little negligence of lab in-charge of not switching off ACs and PCs cause wastage of electricity. We have tried to resolve these issues by implementing the automation in the electrical system. Automation systems have become widespread in several industries by playing a vital role in dominating many process-related operations. We live in the world of automation wherein most of the systems have become machine-driven, such as industrial automation,  automation in homes and alternative business and education sectors. The project is related to the implementation of the automation system in our department i.e. Department of Telecommunication Engineering MUET Jamshoro. The main intention of this project is to design and implement the automation system using an Arduino board with PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors, Raspberry Pi, and LASER techniques. We will also observe the pre and post analysis by comparing data stored or through electricity digital meters using Arduino Wattmeter. 

The proposed system is divided into different areas in the department.

  • For corridors; we use PIR sensors, which are interfaced to the Arduino board (UNO or MEGA), Relays (8 channels), jumper wires through which the electrical appliances are controlled.
  • For classrooms and labs; we implement the automation technique using the Raspberry Pi.

This project presents design and implementation for telecom department’s classrooms, labs, corridors and offices’ automation system based on Arduino Uno microcontroller and raspberry pi as central controllers. We have studied all technologies which are used for the implementation of automation into the department.

As we can extend our system in the whole department and for this purpose (to automate our department) , we need all the above electronic boards , switches and many basic components as well.

Project Objectives

Objective 1:  To upgrade existing system into smart energy efficient system at campus.

Objective 2:  To convert the classes and labs into smart system , using arduino and raspberrypi.
                     (a) By automating multimedia system.
                     (b) By automating tube lights and fans.
                     (c) By automating the doors.

Objective 3: To compare the efficiency of LASER and PIR sensors to achieve the most desirable output.

Objective: 4 To compare pre and post power consumptions  using Arduino Wattmeter.

Project Implementation Method

We will like to implement our project using sensors raspberrypi and arduino. This project will make use of PIR sensor and LASERS, which will automate the appliances and reduce the wastage of power.  The PIR sensors give good performance and require maintenance in 2 to 3 months. On the other hand the Lasers have less area coverage compared to PIR. The PIR covers area of 180 degree with the range of 5-6 meters, compared to LASERS which are highly directional. The performance of both PIR and LASER will be calculated and stored. The use of Arduino and Raspberrypi will depend on the load. Areas where multitasking is required, we will make use of raspberrypi while where there is less computation required arduino will be used.

1. Cost Efficient:

This project brings efficiency in cost as compared with the previous system. 
 

2.Control: 

This project can be used to better control functions within the TL department.

3.Comfort: 

All the lights and fans are controlled automatically providing comfort and precision consumption Energy consumption is lowered. Efficient utilization of the lights and fans minimizes energy consumption

4. Monitoring:

You can monitor the lighting system and ensure that the system is working as desired and there are no bugs in the system.

5. Scope:

As we know that there is an energy crisis and in disciplinary use of electricity in Pakistan, this project has great scope and may be able to reduce the energy crisis in Pakistan

6. Convenience: 

Because home automation technology performs routine tasks automatically, end users experience great convenience. You can set your smart lights and fans to turn on when motion is detected

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

This project will control energy consumption approximately up to 20-25%.
At the end, this project will classify the use of arduino and raspberry pi and describe which is best to save the energy and why, in order to achieve efficiency.
After implementation of this project, this will be observed the doors, projectors, ACs and other appliances will work more smartly and in this sense the life of appliance can also increase.
This report also concludes which sensor or module gives the best result for automation in between LASER & PIR sensors.
