Project Summary

This final year project proposes the comparative analysis of previous works based on the conventional electro-mechanical reactive power compensator that is not suitable for its slow switching action, thyristors that are dully controlled through gate pulse and hence in order to supply gate pulse the separate circuit may be suggested. Hence our aim would be to reduce the hardware and make our controller such that Arduino Mega responsible to control the switching of VSR fastly as per the load variation via a hybrid control algorithm. The project does not only provide hardware solution but also provide a simulation results too via using the platform of MATLAB R2018a version along with validation of hardware and software results.  

Project Objectives

Efficiency of variable shunt reactor (VSR) depends upon the load variation, when load variation is slow VSR works as an efficient reactive power compensator, but when the load variation is fast then the efficiency of VSR may be decreased . This efficiency issue has been resolved by the incorporating the thyristors in proposed hardware but as it is said that there is always an opportunity for an improvement hence keeping this idea in mind here we propose the implementation of hybrid control algorithm such that fuzzy based proportional integral and derivative (F-PID) to regulate the switching of loads and reactors simultaneously to improve the efficiency. 

Project Implementation Method

1)  We will give input to microcontroller to operate it via a power supply circuit which will give 5V to controller.

2) Then we will measure the input voltage and current and give it to controller.

3) 2 or 3 loads are the connected which will generate reactive in the circuit and we will measure the ouput voltage and current.

4) Compare the input and output power and give that ratio to controller.

5)Controller will program in such a way that it can then decide that how much  reactive power is generated and switch the coils according to that reactive power.

  

Benefits of the Project

Shunt Reactors plays an important role in power system stability due to its reactive power compensation ability. It helps to stop fluctuation of voltage at the consumer end which makes the system stable and reliable.This  project will also shorten the swithcing time of VSR because of the usage of hybrid algorithm(Fuzzy based PID).  

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The proposed project will be demonstrated in a manner that different inductive and capacitive load will be connected in order to measure the reactive power produced in percentage which will also shown on LCD (16x2). After measuring the percentage of reactive power the proposed project will switch the inductor based shunt reactors and then the LCD will show the user the reactive power has been reduced. Apart from this manually reading would also be noted using digital multimeter on prescribed excel sheet in order to obtained the overall performance of proposed prototype.
