The Internet of Things (IoT) is emerging as an attractive paradigm in improving quality of life and conserving diminishing natural energy resources. The IoT approach provides connectivity to almost every electronics device that are used in everyday life, ranging from embedded systems, household appliances, various sensors/other forms of hardware, and actuators, which interact with each other and over the Internet. The design and implementation of such systems is fully capable to remotely monitor and control IoT systems. 

In this work we use the IoT technology to design a system for smart homes and offices. As multiple technologies are involved in IoT systems, the design focuses on integration of different platforms that are commonly employed in modern systems. We integrate wireless sensor networks, embedded systems, control systems and perform automation to be applied to dwellings and workplaces. In addition to this hardware design and deployment, a complete software system is designed to implement artificial intelligence techniques to utilize the smart features. The core concept is to integrate hardware devices, components, switches, etc. and facilitate integration with the intelligent software. While the IoT systems are developed and deployed in many parts of the world, it is essential to study the local requirements in Pakistan and adapt according the requirements suitable for particular location. This work focus to study the functionality needed for Pakistan and establish a software framework for implementation of artificial intelligence algorithms. We extend the concept of “smart home” and “smart office” that is adaptable and usable for people living in Pakistan.

Project Objectives

The primary objective of this project is to deploy sensors at various locations to enable an intelligent system to monitor and make decision. In response the readings from the sensors, decisions are implemented to perform necessary actions using actuators and electronics devices. The core of the entire system is the central processing unit that monitors multiple physical phenomena in order to facilitate the user. Some of the objectives are as follows. If any motion is detected in room, an action must be implemented to incorporate the requirements of the inhabitants. Similarly, in the absence of occupants of a dwellings, it is required to implement the conditions necessary for that particular situation. In order to meet the monitoring requirements, notifications are generated and the appropriate users are informed about the status. Notification are generated, for example, if any grocery item could be out of inventory. When the kitchen is not occupied and the door of the fridge is open, a notification may help the user to take appropriate action. The moisture of the soil might be measured and water valve might be opened and closed as required. Automatic Irrigation of plants when moisture is less than required level and climate updates on cellular app.  If home is not always occupied, the energy saving mode might be turned on automatically. In power saving mode necessary devices are turned on while the others may be turned off. When toxic fumes and fireplace is detected notification could be generated and an alarm will go off.
