High-Precision Simulated Image-Guided Cardiac Interventions
Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject SummaryThis final year project aims to extend the earlier developed FYP entitled, “Cardiac Catheterization Simulator”. Technological advancements in computing, medical image acquisition, and visualization pave the way toward minimally invasive surgical interventions. Surgical simulators are important to perform complex medical procedures to ensure a lesser chance of error. These simulators are used to improve surgeons’ expertise as well. The project extends the capabilities of the existing Cardiac Catheterization Simulator (CCS) to perform high-precision image-guided cardiac interventions. The verification and validation component assesses the global accuracy of all integrated processes. The outcome of this project is in the form of incorporating a verification and validation model in CCS.
Project Objectives- To increase the clinician’s spatial navigation abilities while reducing the mental burden associated with fusing multiple sources of information.
- Catalyzing the adoption of image-guided therapy platforms by the clinical community.
- Shifting from traditional direct-view surgery to image-guided interventions.
This medical simulator provides essential facilitation to future medical experts. The development of the simulator and acceptance by the domain experts as a medical
simulator with basic functions shows the success of this research project. It will be a breakthrough in performing cardiac operations as surgeons will be able to practice it before operating on a real patient. This project targets at extending the previously completed project of coronary artery intervention. A software model is produced which is followed by a hardware model. The project is explained in the block diagram:

We will now work on modifying this project and extending it further. The project stimulates high-precision images that will allow interventions in cardiac surgery making the surgeons perform and train complex cardiac procedures to gain expertise.

This project is important for innovations in medical and health sciences for mankind. This project will mainly focus on the validation and verification of medical interventions based on medical images. This project will provide high-precision reproducible measurements and reduce the chances of errors during cardiac interventions thereby enabling a medical practitioner to practice a surgical session prior to performing the standard operation on a real human subject. It will enhance the skills of medical cardiac specialists and will give scoring to them based on their performance.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final deliverable system will be in the form of a typical implementation of the developed architecture. The integrated hardware and software module is capable of collecting and analyzing measurements during a cardiac catheterization intervention in line with a standard scheme to ensure high-precision is achieved for practical usage.
