Project Summary

The specially abled persons (usually the disability of the lower part of the body) and elderly people who are in need of a wheel chair are estimated to be over 100 million worldwide. The idea is to develop a gesture controlled wheelchair which can be navigated using hand gestures.Hand GestureControlled Wheelchair is basic wheelchair which is modified into two modes i.e. either manually or by following the motion of the hand.This type of wheelchair is designed for those patients who are unable to move their limbs and are dependent on care takers for their movement. So our project solve the problem to some extent.
 

Project Objectives

Wheelchair is the best assistive device used by elder and disabled people.The driving and controlling of traditional wheel chair are much harder task.Hence,there is a need of a wheelchair that could be operated by the disabled persons without any effort.In this regard our aim is to build a low cost and powerful wheel chair with a soft and easy control.This will help the handicapped people to travel without depending upon others.But here we will advance it by adding features of obstacles detection and hybrid.
The aim of this development is to serve a service which will be beneficial for handicap persons. The overall objective of the project is to make the hand gesture-controlled wheelchair capable of understanding human body language, however limited, thereby bridging the gap between machine and human. Our objective is also to make this device simple as well as cheaper so that it could be mass produced and can be used for a number of purposes like enabling an individual confined to a wheelchair to be able to move about freely without the stress. Main objective is to produce a product which is comfortable for patient and easy to control. Moreover, some other features may include obstacle detection and autonomous steering to goal points from current location using a local map and navigation system. 

Project Implementation Method

The quality of our project design is that any standard wheelchair available in the market can be converted into an electronic wheelchair. In our project we purchased a standard light weight wheelchair from the market. We welded a steel plate at the back of the wheelchair so that motors can be attached on this steel plate. Also a steel plate in the front bottom is welded to place the electronic components and batteries. 

Gesture Controller:Mpu-6050 is the main buliding block of proposed project.Mpu-6050 will determine the angles of x,y,z at different hand movement(i.e up,down rigth and left).These angles will be sent to receiver end.The receiver end will determine to move in which direction.
 

Obstacle Detection:The Obstacle detection system will be consists of ultrasonic sensors.Through ultrasonic sensor the obstacle will be detected and motor will be force to stop

Hybrid:  Wheelchair will be powered by batteries as well as through solar panel.

Benefits of the Project

The most difficulty faced by physically challenged people is that they have to depend on others for their movement. We have developed a gesture-controlled wheelchair to make them independent. The user just needs to wear a gesture device in which an accelerometer sensor is included. The sensor will identify the movement of the hand in a specific direction which will result in the motion of the wheelchair in the respective directions. An ultrasonic sensor is also used for detecting obstacles in the path.

Drawbacks of Traditional Wheelchair
Traditional wheelchair has following drawbacks:

  1. Manual
  2. No obstacle detection
  3. Difficult for someone living alone to use

Manual
Mainly wheelchair that are present in market are manual. They need human force to move from one place to an other.
No obstacle detection
One of drawback of traditional wheelchair is that they are not able to detect obstacle.
Difficult for someone living alone
For someone living alone it will be extremely difficult for him to access wheelchair place at some distance.For elder ones it will be difficult to move wheelchair on they own.


Advantages of Our Proposed wheelchair
Following are the advantages of Hand Gesture Controlled Wheelchair:
Reduce Man force
It can be used by disabled person independently.Disable people using standard wheelchair somehow are dependent on others while disable people using our proposed wheelchair will feel independent because he will be free to move without other help.
Obstacle detection system
Currently there is no such mechanism for obstacle detection, however our project is design in such a way that if some obstacle is detected the wheelchair stops to avoid any collision or incident.
Hybrid
Our proposed wheelchair will be powered by solar as well as battery which makes its suitable to use for long duration.

Designing of obstacle detection system through which if any obstacle wil come near wheelchair it will force the motor off to avoid any collision. 

Hybrid i.e (Solar and Battery powered).

To have more operating time wheelchair will be powered by batteries as well through solar panel. 

Battery level indicator.
